I'd Like To Learn To Work On The Land: With Animals, With Plants, On Sustainable Building Projects. Here's What I Have To Say:

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

This is an exploratory post. I am reaching out to the Homesteader community to see if there is any interest in what I am laying out here. If nothing else, I am writing the possibility into being.

barge11.jpg

TL;DR: I am interested in spending some time in a commune, community, farm, sustainable building project or something along those lines. I would like accommodation and a certain amount of independence and freedom in exchange for what I can offer. I am open to ideas. My Discord is #8656.

Background:

My life situation - the externals - are changing and shifting. I had asked the Universe to assist me in moving out of the 'Comfort Zone' I had developed around myself over the past three years and this is happening. In April, I handed in my notice at work with the intention of quitting at the end of July and of kick-starting this shift. It turned out to be a considerably stronger kick than I had anticipated and I will also be leaving my current accommodation a month or so after finishing up at work.

Basic Proposal:

Rather than look for somewhere else to stay (the hassle, the expense, the need to find 'work' to pay for it), I would like to pursue the possibility of doing something I have been wanting to do for a few years now. I would like to work on the land, work with animals, work on sustainable/renewable building projects - in any capacity really, as long as it does not violate certain fundamental principles (exploitation of other Beings through lack of care and respect being the main one).

barge8.jpg

What I can offer:

As stated, I am willing to consider anything! I have a preference for animals but I would also love to work with wood; with plants and trees; on sustainable building projects such as the construction of an Earthship; to help dig an irrigation canal or sow/harvest crops etc. I can take photos of animals, homestead life etc and make them ready for your blog. I can cook vegetarian/vegan food in a few different styles. I can offer neutral perspectives and have ideas bounced off me. Plenty of other stuff yet to be discovered (by me :)!

barge12.jpg

I am soon to turn 47. I am pretty fit. My diet is vegetarian and almost entirely dairy-free. I have the ability to express myself, to take photographs and to write creatively when the feeling comes. My blog reflects a lot of who I am and it is there for all to see. I have no previous experience of living on a homestead or in a community and would need some initial guidance with things that I do not have experience of. I have aptitude and learn quickly, but you would have to be prepared for me to take a little time to find my feet. Much as I have wanted this experience, when it comes it will be new for me and I may not hit the ground running - I will after all be out of my Comfort Zone.

barge10.jpg

What I would like:

Somewhere to stay in the short-medium term (flexible), starting around Autumn 2019. I would like a certain degree of autonomy. I do not need luxury or mod-cons but I would like freedom to smoke and space for my simple meditation and yoga practice. A caravan or shed would be great, ideally with water, electricity and heating - but as long as I have access to a bath/shower room I could make do without. I am currently in Scotland so somewhere in the UK would be easy to get to, but I am also open to the possibility of traveling to somewhere in Europe (comfy in German & French; can get by in Spanish; can make basic sense of Italian, Portugese, Dutch).

Who am I?

I'll let my blog answer this question. I've been blogging on the blockchain since January 2018 and there is a blogMAP with all my content listed under suitable headings. You'll get a pretty good idea of the kind of person I am after browsing my content.

Let's chat if you would like to explore this any further. You can get me on Discord #8656 or in the comments below.

General note:

To be clear, I'm not looking to deal in currency - fiat or crypto, although I would consider it to an extent. I have also been looking at other options and avenues regarding what to do and where to go, such as www.thepoosh.org. I am taking this step during the transition period until crypto moons - coming soon to a blockchain nearby - after which I (and all of us really :) will be well taken care of!

Any tips or suggestions are welcome. Please pass this on to any relevant groups if you know of any and can be bothered :).

Thanks for reading

Yes man I liked resding this guys post from my partiko app on my phone- it worked well- the upvote process should be fast - boom - like- continue- we need to save steem and get some serious paid Instagram and YouTube accounts to promote it

I feel like his post was 90% just showing up and wanting to do something, and i think we can provide some solutions for this guy, like giving him the advice of creating some videos of himself spreading STEEM to all the local homesteaders around him , stuff like that can reallyhelp

Many thanks for the encouragement, the suggestions and the resteem @ackza 👊

Nice, I've done what you are looking to do and am about to set off on a similar journey again.

Here are some good resources to find what you are looking for.

https://www.freecampsites.net
https://www.workaway.info
https://www.helpx.net/index.asp

The 2nd and 3rd are sites that connect those looking for help with volunteers. The average arrangement is 25hrs a week of work for room and board. There are quite a few offering what you are looking for, but read everything. Some are a bit stuffy and don't even allow tobacco use, but other's are a bit more open minded.

Good luck, my friend.

Many thanks for the tips and good wishes Notconvinced - have taken a look and they are great resources. Your proposed journey looks excellent - electric bike with trailer and dog friend for company - and it's mostly DIY! I'd love to travel in a similar manner and may do so in the future once crypto has moved significantly. I also joined WWOOF and have been looking at various rural places.

Thanks again for stopping by and all the very best to you too bro!

Outstanding man. Hope you find the right place to start. Power to you. Following in hopes you post more about your journey. Best of luck brother.

I intend to blog about the journey with photos etc as I go through it - just as long as I have access to the internet lol.

Many thanks indeed for the interest and the good wishes Scottyt 🔆.

Hey, I found your article inspiring, so I mentioned it in this freewrite I just posted.

This is excellent encouragement Stortebeker. I'm hoping that in the near future crypto will be at a level where blogging about living alternate lifestyles will help sustain them and of course generate interest in the idea of a Matrix-free Life of Freedom!!!

Many thanks and all the best to you 🔆

Well sure, at some point the prices of cryptos are going to go up. This could be good or great, depending on how much you've invested, in which coins, and how long you want to wait.
But I think there is a much greater potential to use cryptos precisely what they're theoretically intended for: as money, that is a means of exchange, as well as abundance generator, kinda like when you up-vote posts, or delegate SP so that others can do that.
Do you remember those circle-jerk-like movements Steem used to be so full of in its early days? The ones like: "Let's make a pact, you up-vote all of my crap, and I'll up-vote yours, and then we'll get a bunch of people to do the same..." Well, the reasoning failed at the crappy posts. Of course these gangs will fall apart if there is no good content. But if we focus on the content, meaning in this case the documentation of volunteering experiences in gardens, farm, natural builds, bicycle stuff, ... whatever it is, then we can create a group where people are going to want to be members of because they are interested in the projects. The massive up-votes will come on their own.
All the other things, such as crowdfunding, centering the effort around its own coin, creating a non-profit trust, or something along those lines, can grow out from there.

I agree that thinking of the 'value' of crypto in terms of fiat currency is redundant, although the 'exchange rate' will go up at some point (personally, I think it's starting now and will pick up speed). More and more services will become available - exchangeable if you will, for crypto. Having said that, if Steem were to go up to say $10, and I needed/wanted to, I would trade small amts here and there. I'm in for the long run but not wedded to anything as such - tokens pretty much coming out of my ears: Steem, Smoke, WEED, PAL etc, and I've only ever bought Steem.

I agree with the shift in perspective towards a mindset of abundance and I believe it is built into the system. 'Abuse' of the system (voting circles etc) comes from the scarcity mindset that seeks to gather and thinks that that is the priority and a measure of success - the old shit right :). Agree therefore also with your third point about quality content (whatever that may be!) having the pleasant side-effect of being an 'income' generator on top of the satisfaction of liberated self-expression.

Hahaha, Steem is actually the only token I have that I did NOT buy. It's all from blogging, which is worth about the same as all my other coins... or at least until a few weeks ago, when they started taking off.

As for the quality content, it's of course always in the eye of the up-voter. Which is why I like to keep mine informative, a bit visual, around 1000 words... which is what I like to see in a good post myself. But to each their own.

And whether we call a banding together of folks a gang or a community only depends on what they do and how. Which is why I'm super happy to have made connections with you. S steem on, my friend, lots of good luck on your endeavors, and I look forward to reading your posts!

Thank You David 🙏

Beautiful and heartfelt, aligned and surefooted @barge , you have my upmost support 🔆
