Going NUTs on the HomesteadsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

Here @beatitudes8 homestead we have a few different types of nut trees producing on and around our property.

Pecan

The first and probably our favorite are the two pecan trees. Pecans are a rather easy nut to crack and get out of the shell which is always the hardest part about harvesting your own, and here is the best part yum yum.

Black Walnut

This classic nut is loved and preferred over the walnut by most people for eating and cooking.

The Black Walnut is a harder nut to crack and harvest. It requires removing the nut itself from the husk which is easly done by just driving over them. When cleaning or de-husking its important to wear gloves and old clothes because the "black" will stain your hands and clothes.

Hickory

Perhaps the best tasting nut of all. The Hickory nut has excellent flavor but is very difficult to crack, and the "meat" to shell ratio is not the best.
You can use the hickory the same as you would a walnut or pecan in recipes.

Have you ever tried pickling the green walnuts? Amazing with crackers and blue cheese!

I’ve never even heard of pickling a nut. Very interesting Thank you,

It is literally making me salivate even thinking about pickled walnuts! It's a really flavoursome delicacy.

Here's some photos from when me and my mum made them. These were from our walnut tree in the garden in our then home in the south of France.

Feel free to post the link.

Did you pickle them in the husk?

There is no link! Yes - they're in the husk! You pick them when they are young, the pickled husk is edible and delicious after being pickled.

I’ll have to try this.

I recommend it. Makes good Christmas presents as well.

WOW All you're missing is my favorite hazelnuts!

I am imagining all the wonderful desserts and cooking ideas now that could be made from these nuts! You are VERY fortunate!

Nothing like it in the world!
Can't start a day without my hazelnut coffee!

Haha yes hazelnut is good but not my favorite. French vanilla or caramel would be my choice.

Great Job! These things are so expensive if you buy them at the store!

I know, right? He has a fortune sitting in his backyard. Are we jealous yet?

Yeah and with just a little work you can get them for free! Thank you

I love pecans - wish I could grow them here in Wales. But too wet and wild.

I have got some young walnut trees though. Hopefully we will have some walnuts in a few years.

It seems like most nut trees take forever to start producing. We planted our orchard two years ago fruit and nut. Luckily we had nut mature nuts on the property already. We have persimmons producing also I just haven't really done anything with them yet. Cows love them though so they don't go to waste at least.
thank you for commenting.

My oldest three walnuts are now 6 years old. I've been told it will be at least 10 years before they begin to have nuts.

I love going nuts. I go nuts all the time!

Very cool! I helped my daughter collect black walnuts this year and it was a fun thing to do together. Her glove did not hold up so I did get a little laugh over that = )
Nothing like a good pecan pie..yum!

My hands were black for a day or two.

SOO right about those black walnuts!!! : -D

We go foraging for walnuts every year. You're lucky to be blessed with such an abundance.

We feel very blessed for everything we have. Thank you
