Pig Mamma vs Copperhead
WASTE NOT WANT NOT!
When we purchased our land here in the Ozarks, it was raw and overgrown. To make room for our cabin site we had to do some clearing. The brush that accumulated from the clearing was stacked into piles in the hopes of getting a chipper shredder to return the biomass to the soil from which it came. Unfortunately, the chipper shredder never materialized so I decided to just burn the piles of brush since I can get all the wood chips I want from a local yard waste site.
The other night I decided to light a pile of brush on fire and it true homesteading fashion, we made it a multi purpose burn. @allforthegood gathered up some all-beef hotdogs and the fixings for smores and our brush burn quickly became a fun family campfire!
We were done eating and looking to wrap the night up when one of our dogs, Loki, started barking near the fence of the goat corral. Now, Loki barking at the goats isn't a new occurrence, but it can be a mild annoyance. So I yelled at him to stop barking and went about poking the loose brush back into the main body of fire. Loki kept barking, however, and my eldest son went over to see what all the hub-bub was about.
"Eagle-Eye" Alexander yelled, "Dad! It's a snake! It's a huge copperhead!"
I quickly came over, giving stern commands to the children and the dogs to stay back.
At first I didn't see it but then ol' Eagle-Eye pointed his flashlight at it as it tried to get away under some brush nearby. I grabbed a stick to try and stop it from getting under the pile of brush but it was too quick.
I could here it rattling in the brush pile but no longer had visual contact. I decided that it was better to find it and dispatch it rather than let it escape because of it's size and because it was so near our main living area. I cautiously starting pulling some of the brush away from the pile as Eagle-Eye stood at the opposite corner of the pile looking for the escaping snake.
In the end, the snake ended up coming back out of the pile and it was quickly dispatched. The head was severed and thrown into the woods and the body was fed to Pig-Mamma.
Never a dull moment on the homestead!
It was also a good reminder to my children that they must stay alert and vigilant for potential dangers on our land.
Thanks for Reading!
As Always,
Oooh, copperheads are nasty!! Good job on teaching Alexander what to look out for!!!
Welcome Snowpea! Good to see you on here!
Thank you, good to see you on here too!! Send the family our love. ❤ No wonder you're never on Facebook haha. If only I could get everyone else I know on Steemit I could kick Facebook to the curb! 😂
Yup, I'm hardly ever on FB because of Steemit. I'm trying hard to get everyone I know on this platform instead. "Don't Post For Free" "Don't waste your time online, Invest It!" I'm not on Steemit too much these days either, simply because I've been busy.
This the good post on steemit. follow me and i will follow you
great blog @bluertangreen keep up
Thnx @bluerthangreen for putting this info all together.
LOKI is the dog's name? Sweet.
Hey @bluerthangreen I have been here in Arkansas just a little over 2 years and thank Yehovah I have not encountered any venomous snakes. I've got a half a mag of snake shot for the ol'glock loaded up and ready to go just in case I do though. Thought I would let you know something happened with the coding of your closing image and it just says BLUER-closing-3(1).jpg Hope we can get together sometime this fall before it starts getting cold. Did you ever get a chance to watch that DVD I loaned to your famous neighbor?
Hmmm. The last image looks fine on my end, I'm not sure. What browser do you use? No, haven't seen the video yet.
I'm using Google chrome on my phone.
hmmm. Tis a mystery to me. I uploaded the original image off my computer instead of copying and pasting from a previous post. Seems to have worked. Dunno? Thanks for the heads up.
Now it's showing up correctly. 15 minutes ago it wasnt. Weird.
I love all of the "Pig Mamma VS." posts 😂
Great post!!
Pig-Momma wins every time (if you can call that winning)
Are you familiar with the concept of hugelkultur? The short version is that you throw soil on wood, making planting areas which are self-fertilizing, hold moisture, give more surface and avoid needing to burn organic materials or move them off the land. Permies.com has huge forums on hugelkultur among other things...
Yes I am. I am definitely going to incorporate that "technology" if the land calls for it. The first earth works that I will be doing is a 600 foot Swale along the road way to our land.
Cool!! 600 foot will be nice. I am assuming you have some equipment to dig and earth move.... In my urban homestead here, I do all by hand and have been digging...... and digging and shlepping. Repeat :)
Shlepping is a wonderful past-time! We can't get any heavy machinery up our mountains.
Haha. At least it makes us strong, right?
