Are you familiar with the concept of hugelkultur? The short version is that you throw soil on wood, making planting areas which are self-fertilizing, hold moisture, give more surface and avoid needing to burn organic materials or move them off the land. Permies.com has huge forums on hugelkultur among other things...

Yes I am. I am definitely going to incorporate that "technology" if the land calls for it. The first earth works that I will be doing is a 600 foot Swale along the road way to our land.

Cool!! 600 foot will be nice. I am assuming you have some equipment to dig and earth move.... In my urban homestead here, I do all by hand and have been digging...... and digging and shlepping. Repeat :)

Shlepping is a wonderful past-time! We can't get any heavy machinery up our mountains.

Haha. At least it makes us strong, right?
