Is a little dose of Nihilism healthy?

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Hey My J's,

It's me back again for your daily dose of random thoughts for the day is my thoughts around how people tend to get caught up in mircocasms of their daily lives and build these echo chambers of self-importance. I fall into it too and I'm conscious of it and always try to snap myself back out of it and try and find this equilibrium where and try to practice a little bit of existentialism.

I don't often succeed but I do try, I don't really have the greatest struggles in the world I sort of just mousy about through life trying not to get trapped by dogma. I try to be generous and explore new things and ideas and on occation interact with people to provide and disprove theories I have and just try and improve myself gradually with time.

I know this is not for everyone and too many this seems wildly unimportant and a waste of time, when there's so many things they need to do and responsibilities they have and by all means, it's your life, live it how you choose to, that's free will.

I just think certain things you feel may be a big deal to you may not be if you just take a step back and look at through a different scope and I think nihilism can really help in that sense.

Nothing from nothing leaves nothing

We like to attach meaning to certain things and use our loosely defined morals to govern our decision making. We apply it to inanimate things a silly example would be you get good food and bad food, when in fact you just get food. The stigma behind it is simply the over-consumption and not the actual food itself.

Sitting on the couch, for example, can be deemed laziness which is seen as negative while other times it can be seen as relaxing which is a positive. These viewpoints of seemly nothing situations really is pretty arbitrary in nature, yet they can evoke real emotion.

Which is why I think sometimes you need to just take a second look at things and say hey is this really something once I remove my emotions, reasoning and initial reactions or is it actually nothing. I think the world of instant gratification has ruined the way we communicate and no one really takes the time to think and evaluate on the things they say or do, it's just blurted out on a whim.

I realise everyone's minds operate differently and have their own influences and what they deem important I'm not about to force my ideologies on anyone. I don't think I have it figured out at all, my ideologies will change over time as I learn and encounter new things, ideas and thoughts.

The song has no bearing on the message, I just happen to like it and thought it was a good song to share.

Have your say

What do you good people of steem think?

Holla at me in the comments! All my commenters I will now refer to as Jessie. Jessie is a good friend of mine, but Jessies got a girl and I want to make her mine.

J dog here, there have only been a few things that have made it on to my how much is this likely to hardfork my existence? Will it be an issue in 5 minutes, a day, a, week, a year, a, decade. And while existentially speaking, sure the amount of butter you put on toast or how much you road rage can greatly impact ones future, it's not as likely to be as impactful as some trauma, death, dis-ease, incarceration etc. will be.

So I too try to remove my emotional self from the equation and think big or even in multidimensionality but I often fail and blow small things up. Mindfulness is no permanent achievement it's an eternal pursuit.

I like your stuff, this one might inspire a post as I'm just glazing over some pretty core me concepts 😂 and I'm important enough to be nothing..

Lol I am pretty chuffed to see you have chosen the path of least resistance and embraced your inner J.

Lol do you also find the how comical your failure can be, like what was I thinking getting riled up by this thing that's actually nothing? Our lizard brain tends to overpower plenty of rational thought and in some people it can last ages or even be how they function.

I often think of this scene in the Matrix where Neo goes to meet the oracle and he sits with some of the other gifted kids and one says to him "Do not try to bend the spoon, for its impossible, only try to realise the truth, there is no spoon."

Lets not try to bend spoons! I look forward to your inspired post, tag me so I don't miss it.

I had to Google chuffed, I’m chuffed about this new word.

Yes, the fails are comical but I still get annoyed by how pleased I am with myself while impassioned by the fury. I can’t recall anything that wasn’t regretted immediately following the fits.

No spoons to bend over this way. Let’s see if I can conjure up some content.

Before i beat myself up for not doing the things on my todo list i step back and remind myself that my todo list is just a place to list possible activities. In most cases the world wont come crashing down if i dont get to them yet. Just a Jessie's thought.

Lol I enjoy a good Jessie thought, they're often filled with pragmatism and wisdom. I too have a to do list, its right next to me, I write i it daily and sometimes its fulfilling and other times it brings me anxiety and yet it is an inanimate object, lol our worlds are as fragile as we make them out to be, if we take a step back and see the nothing in what we feel is something. Great comment, hope to see you around these parts more often.

Interesting choice of topic @chekohler

try to practice a little bit of existentialism.

How do you do that?

I just think certain things you feel may be a big deal to you may not be if you just take a step back and look at through a different scope and I think nihilism can really help in that sense.

Absolutely. Sometimes we all need to step back. PErhaps even few steps. And get some different perspective. See things from the distance. It does help quite often.

I think the world of instant gratification has ruined the way we communicate and no one really takes the time to think and evaluate on the things they say or do, it's just blurted out on a whim.

Wouldn't you perhaps agree that Steemit is very unique place for that particular reason? It's first social media out there where people do have some longer attention span. And that's a game-changer.

Interesting read :)
Cheers, Piotr

I practice existentialism by not focusing on what to think but how to think and then explore how other people may see this process of thinking and how it can be different and why they come to the conclusions they do

I agree steemit has been able to foster a different kind of narrative between users where the quality of the engagement is more valued than the level of engagement.
