Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes parte de lo que ha vivido mi mamá, que tiene días internada con el COVID-19; pero este post no será de lamentos y anécdotas tristes, será un post muy esperanzador y emotivo.

El lugar donde tienen recluida a mi mamá es el IFEMA de Madrid; un centro de convenciones y ferias inmenso, que precisamente conocí con ella en el 2008 en una exposición de arte increíble y que todos los años por el mes de octubre se realiza.

Cuando me dijo que se la llevaron al IFEMA enseguida me preocupé, porque a pesar que conozco como son las instalaciones de salud en España, pensar que estaría en un recinto ferial igual puede mortificar. Uno se hace mil ideas y sobre todo después de ver los hospitales chinos que construyeron en pocos días.

Es que si a ese lugar lo consienten de esa manera, cualquiera le puede tomar cariño, incluso su tu estadía no es la más placentera.

El lugar está perfectamente acondicionado para tratar a miles de pacientes. Cuando vez las escenas te das cuenta que no tiene nada que envidiar a ningún hospital de primer mundo y sobre pasa las expectativas de uno de tercer mundo.

The place is perfectly equipped to treat thousands of patients. When you see the scenes you realise that it has nothing to envy from any first world hospital and it exceeds the expectations of a third world hospital.

Es solo un recinto ferial, un galpón (nave) pero que la equiparon con la mejor tecnología y en tiempo record. También el hecho que el espacio es amplio y ningún paciente se encuentra en condición de hacinamiento.

Tienen una fortaleza tremenda y siempre una sonrisa para aliviar el sufrimiento.

Doctors, nurses and all those who work for patients have a love for what they do that infuses patients with that energy. They have tremendous strength and always have a smile to ease the suffering.

Todos los días llegan con regalos para los enfermos. Regalos que les dejan las personas; desconocidos que envían lo que sea para dar ánimos. Empresas que dedican su tiempo y mercancías a dar alegrías a los pacientes.

Every day they arrive with gifts for the sick. Gifts that people leave them; strangers who send anything to cheer them up. Companies that dedicate their time and goods to bring joy to patients.

El día que mi mamá me contó como los consienten; recibía una caja con montón de regalos. Incluían, peines, zapatillas, mascarillas para dormir y muchas cosas más.

The day my mom told me how they spoil them; I was getting a box with a bunch of presents. They included, combs, slippers, sleeping masks and many other things.

Otra de las curiosidades y que nos sorprende a muchos, es la creación de una biblioteca. Nació de forma espontánea cuando algunas personas comenzaron a donar libros para que los pacientes se entretengan leyendo. Han sido tantos que un estante se convirtió en 3 y sigue en aumento. Cientos de libros a disposición de todos.

Another curiosity, which surprises many of us, is the creation of a library. It was born spontaneously when some people started donating books for patients to enjoy reading. There have been so many that one shelf became three and is still growing. Hundreds of books are available to everyone.

Para finalizar este post, les cuento la parte más conmovedora. La que miles de personas de todas partes le escriben cartas a los enfermos. Llegan todos los días; una por email y otras físicamente. Cada paciente puede tener incluso más de dos cartas diarias que le dan fuerzas y te hacen sentir parte de algo más grande. De una cantidad inmensa de personas que esperan que te recuperes.

To finish this post, I'll tell you the most touching part. The one where thousands of people from all over write letters to the sick. They arrive every day; one by email and others physically. Each patient may have even more than two letters a day that give them strength and make you feel part of something bigger. From a huge number of people who are waiting for you to recover.

Mi mamá ya se está recuperando. Ha pasado la parte más difícil y pronto le darán de alta, recordando tantas cosas que le dieron fuerza para abrazar la vida junto con millones de seres humanos...
