In this post, I analyse the data put together in the Global Destination Cities Index for 2016 by Master card. You can check out the full report here
Bangkok is the top travel destination
Bangkok had an estimated 21.47 million international overnight visitors during 2016, followed by London and Paris with an estimate 19.88 and 18.03 million international overnight visitors respectively. Here is a table showing the top 20 global destinations ranked by number of international overnight visitors.

A massive 31.3 billion dollars was spent by international visitors in Dubai. London and New York round up the top three with 19.76 and and 18.52 billion dollars spent by international visitors respectively.
Top Travel Destinations in Each Continent
In case you have a bucket list to visit at least one city in each continent , well what better city to visit than the highest ranked city on that continent based on the number of international overnight visitors. You know,just to find out yourself what the fuss is all about hehe :

New York- Top Travel Destination North America
Lima - Top Travel Destination South America
Sydney - Top Travel Destination Australia

Lol just write it down as your target and start with the city closest to you. I'm sure you could achieve it.
I've been to Bangkok a few times, also in 2016 :) It's amazing there - I really love it, it doesn't surprise me that it's that high up! I'm more surprised that other cities are that high up on the list, but that's great! Definitely add one of them on my bucket list :)
