SLC-S31W4-"My Taste My Culture (Street Food)/ (Massa)!"
Hi steemians,
For some of us who are not from Africa, you might have no idea on this particular food but all thanks to the steemit platform for bringing us all here together to know and learn about our individual foods, most especially how these foods are being prepared.
Massa is a very simple food that can be done within an hour depends on how early or late you want to consume it. It's one of the foods we call street foods in my part of the world. Massa is made up of dry corn and rice, it doesn't need much ingredients at all and it's very simple like I have mentioned earlier.
Now, lets dive into the kitchen for our Massa preparation steps.
Task 1: Preparation (3 marks)
Prepare your culture’s street food. Show clear steps of your ingredients and cooking process.
Ingredients
- Maize
- Rice
- Vegetable oil
- Sugar
First of all, the corn and rice has to be washed and cooked for 5-6 minutes afterwhich you will allow it cool down because ofcourse it should be very hot.
Now, its well washed and ready to be grounded. You can use your grinding engine, blender both manual and electric depends on whatever machine you will choose to use but the result should be that, it is properly grinded.
There's no power supply that is why I couldn't use my blender so I sent my younger sister to go grind from a nearby engine and you can see from the above picture how white it looks. At this point, you put the sugar and mix properly until the sweetness goes round with just a pinch of salt depends on the quantity.
This is the massa on fire, since the corn and rice has already been cooked, this frying method does not need much frying at all. Drop a spoon of vegetable oil on each of those hoes and allow it to be hot as you then put your massa on the fire to have a little heat and after some minutes use your spoon to turn the order side to the oil and give it a minute and your massa is done.
This is what we have guys. Very simple to cook, soft and sweet because of the sugar. If you love what you are seeing, you can as well give it a try.
Lifestyle & Accessibility (2 marks)
What lifestyle does this street food represent and How affordable and accessible is it? What is the cultural importance of this street food and why it is widely consumed in your culture?
I want to boldly say that the lifestyle this street food represent is hardwork. I am from the Northern part of my country Nigeria and we do more of farming than businesses. We need more of carbohydrates to keep us strong and massa is not just a street food but it is one of those foods that keeps us from being hungry for hours.
Massa is widely consumed because of how affordable it is, each of this is ₦50 which is steem equvalent to 0.7 steem. Most of the labourers in my part of the world prefers to eat massa out of all the street foods because it is affordable and accessable.
Task 3: Cultural Connection (2 marks)
What does this street food say about your people’s way of life?
Does it reflect: Busy lifestyles? Economic realities? Community interaction? Explain its role in everyday culture.
Massa says alot about my culture. When you check through very well and may be from your research, northern part of Nigeria produce more of maize and rice which we use our available agricultural produce to have what we can eat and be sustained therefore, it keeps my people very busy to produce more which is as well as creating a busy lifestyle to youths and has also made it so clear to the entire community that this very street foods serves us well and as we as well need to make good production which will keep giving them a busy lifestyle.

That's one of the advantages of being on this platform, and what I love most is seeing recipes that make my mouth water, and I love trying them out. Have a wonderful day, and thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you love seeing different recipes and I hope you've found mine interesting too dear, I appreciate your warm comment and visit on my post, success to us all.
Through your post, I learned a lot about the traditional Nigerian street food, Massa. You have beautifully explained the steps from soaking the rice to the fermentation process and then preparing it in that special pan. The images clearly showed how soft and delicious the food looks. In our area, we have a similar food called Chitoi Pitha, which tastes amazing with bharta. The taste of eating this Chitoi Pitha with Bharta is amazing. I really enjoyed how you highlighted the tradition and love for local street food in your writing. Thank you for sharing this unique food experience.
Best wishes for this contest, friend! 🙂
