The Future of Steem: Community Building is a Complicated Business!
I've been a member of a vast range of online communities for more than 25 years... and counting.
It started back in the mid-1990s when I became very interested in various interest groups on what was then America Online. All of a sudden, it seemed like the entire world could be found beyond the screen of my monitor!
In time, I was a member of — and sometimes admin or moderator of — a large number of online message board communities covering a wide range of interests from psychology to hobbies to relationship advice and beyond.
Of course, I was also part of the early ”social blogging” movement and needless to say I ”did time” on social media giants like MySpace and Facebook.
As a keen observer of human motivation and psychology, I have long been fascinated by the underlying ideas of what actually constitutes an online ”community.”
For the past four years and change, I have been watching Steemit with great interest, wondering what direction this ”new frontier” we're part of would take.
What I find interesting is that, in spite of the fact that we like to think that this is something brand new, we are clearly not exempt from the usual human foibles and idiosyncrasy's!
In other words, just because we are ”on the blockchain” doesn't exempt us from the usual problems like scams, spam, greed, cheating, system abuse, account theft, along with the usual variety of shady human behavior.
As many of us have experienced...
But how do you build a solid community? Or, if you want to get even further down to earth, what exactly constitutes a ”good” community?
If there's one thing I've learned along the way, it is that there's a lot more to ”community building” than merely doing a lot of marketing and going out and telling a bunch of people that you're here and open for business.
For starters, you have to have a clear understanding of exactly what it is you're offering to the world. And that's not always easy to define.
And even if you do, it's still unpredictable how people find communities and become part of them!
For example, I ended up on Steemit because somebody recommended an article about universal basic income that just happened to be written by a Steemit community member and was published here. The person who recommended the article had no idea what Steemit was, and I certainly didn't come here because I had heard about Steemit or about being rewarded for blogging… I purely came here to read the article, then got curious, looked around for a while, and then decided to make an account and become a community member.
It would be all but impossible to create a marketing plan to account for something like that!
Anyway, I'm considering writing a series of articles about community building and marketing and what exactly constitutes good communities and how to deal with what is often a ”retention problem.” Because there's more to building a community than simply attracting people — you also have to make sure that what you're doing is interesting enough that they want to stay and continue to participate once they've arrived.
How do we do that? More to follow, on that...
Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your week!
How about YOU? What do YOU think makes something a "good" community? What makes you "join" a membership web community? What makes you STAY? Leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

Thanks for the support, I appreciate it!
We see Communities core to the future growth of Steem.
Finding the optimal ways to to nuture and develop them to become self-reliant, thriving, open and welcoming Communities is the challenge.
All thoughts and ideas welcome.
Hello, excuse me. Since you say that as thoughts and ideas are welcome.
There are communities for the same topic, as well as different communities for the same country. Why are not all the people of the same country focused on growing a single account? Today everyone wants to manage their own communities because in a certain way only administrators are rewarded. People only care about their personal benefit. If we continue like this, each user will create their own community and there will be the same number of communities as the number of users.
The administrators and moderators of country communities are really trying to convince which influential personalities and with the capacity to invest in their country to find out what is happening here in steemit. How is it possible to change the lives of people who are interested in creating quality content? Are they doing the right promotion? They're just bringing people in and teaching them how to withdraw.
It occurs to me that administrators and representatives of communities of countries should seek external support and motivate their followers to do so. Make a suitable promotion and use parts of your rewards to contribute to a promotion that attracts investors (politicians, influencers, entrepreneurs, artists.) People who are really interested in helping the community of their country, and who understand that it can be invest the money and earn interest or profit by rewarding other people's content. That your money will always be there available in case you want to withdraw it when you like, and that by giving a like or positive vote you are contributing to the personal growth of the content creator and in turn you are earning the same, that the more you support the more you can earn .
We wealthy people must collect money from rewards to pay for a promotional advertisement or advertising that allows the information to actually reach the people we need to come.
If it is not possible for the country communities to have an account that is independent and that does not need the mercy of the healing team to reward the members and users of their community, we must at least get investors to come to support.
The current promotions will really be like this? People promote what they want (I have even seen proportions where they misuse company logos ie "The steem stripes with the name of steemit.com" and vice versa. People still do not know the difference of this. Their representatives are Have they been commissioned to let you know?
-We also need a mobile application where people can easily create their account, publish (write the publications with options to center images, justify texts, among others), comment, invest, Power up, transfer, read the publications in any language, etc. Today everything is being done easily from our smartphone and I think that steemit should not be left behind.
These are two ideas that I think will make us become a trend around the world.
I totally agree with you. It hurts me when I see many communities with same topic or even from same country. What could be the purpose of that? The only one answer that comes to mind is those communities are not built to gather the people of same taste, they are built to earn extra vote from @steemcurator01. It is time we thought about it.
Another thing, the CR of each country should motivate every member to build Steem Power. They need to make everyone understand how powering up helps the whole community. Being selfish and withdrawing all Steem/SBD earnt from posts is harmful for both the community and Steemit.
Yes - re multiple communities.
Yes - re Country Representatives.
We will shortly be announcing a new group of CRs. We will be encouraging them, along with the existing CRs, to encouraging people to build their Steem Power.
We are keen to reward those people who are powering up and not constantly extracting their vote rewards.
4 Bangladeshi country communities. It is never possible to increase power by opening more than one community in this way. Earlier steem-bangladesh community had 90000 sp. The sp has decreased due to the opening of new communities there. I think a country needs to have a community.
Many communities are getting support at booming. But they are not powering up. If 4000$ votes are cast per month in a community then at least 7000 sp is generated in that community. Then if everyone power up. Then 7000 sp community will increase every month. But I have noticed many communities whose power is not increasing.
You need to notice these aspects. Admins of every community need to be strict. Those who are not power up. They should not be supported in booming or contest.
I heard from @rex-sumon that you decided to not want to work with him and @tarpan and that was why they created more communities. It seems that you don't know why this been happening and would love to hear the story from your side too
They had already created the community And they worked in their own community. They did not give time to steem-bangladesh community. Besides, they made a mistake. That's why I left them out And the main reason you do not know. I was excluded from their mod If there is no mod, that delegation cannot be kept. Does it make any sense?
Rex-sumon- world of photography
tarpan- world of cricket
But here are the 4 same communities in Bangladesh that have been mentioned. Their admin is other people.
around the world
Bangladesh
Best.Bangladesh
These three communities are not admin tarpan or rex-sumon.
Yes, that's unfortunate. We were the top SP holder once.
Yes, that would make Steemit the Steemit we dream about!
Very much agree with your thoughts.
We would prefer there to be one unifying community for each country but unfortunately personality differences seem to lead to splits and breakaway communities appear within individual countries.
Likewise for topic communities - although there may be cases for subdivisions of large topic areas into separate communities.
We really really want communities to become more self-reliant and build up their Steem Power to support their own members. When we give generous votes to community accounts we very much expect those to be fully powered up - and certainly not extracted to reward individuals.
The next stage for the development of communities is for them to start reaching out to advertise themselves to the outside world and bring new people to the platform. Ideally people willing to invest and build their Steem Power.
We will be looking out to reward those communities who actively and succesfully do that.
Regarding a mobile app, for the time being, hopefully PLAY STEEM can fulfil that role.
Thank you very much for your contribution here.
Hello
We are working hard to rekindle our steemit adventure that we have left unfinished and to create new user potential, Steemit-Türkiye community in our to encourage new users. We are very happy to support them by doing some activities for the community. In this process, it would be selfish to expect support only from curator accounts.
We do our best to create our own curation by constantly instilling in the users in our community that the correct use of the votes given by the curator and the importance of SP is important. One of the biggest features that distinguishes Steemit Turkey from other communities is that it is a community token.
First of all, we want them to strengthen their personal accounts by directing the users correctly and warning them about sp. It is really difficult to get positive votes at first. Many of our high-quality content in our community just disappears without getting high ratings.
We say that in order to encourage them and keep them on the platform, they should support them by getting votes from the nutbox in return for the tr token we have created and that they should raise this support as sp. We believe that we will create our own curation in a short time thanks to the conscious people in our community. Our work on this subject will continue.
The Steemwomensclub community helps us a lot in this regard, and strives to highlight quality posts among female friends in our community.
Although we as a society have formed different communities, nobody should doubt that we will bring them all together for a single goal. We will continue to work and grow stronger. We will protect our unity, we will always continue to support each other.
In our Steem activity club community, it is aimed to gather and strengthen users from different communities by organizing various competitions. We have a dream, we will continue to work to achieve that dream.
regards
@steemit-turkiye
@habercitr
The price of steem is the main fact that people couldn't hold themselves to powerdown and not powering up. I remember when you only support 100% powerup post. That time was golden time. Everyone had a lot of steem power. Is there anyway to start that 100% power up post trend again? 200% powerup post isn't promising I guess.
Community split is a great problem. Community account losts a lot of Delegation. Beside a lot of Newcomers'. They doesn't even care of powering up or Delegation.
Yes, the increased price of Steem may trigger our greediness. But if we act accordingly that, how can we increase the value of Steem? We need to put aside our greed and believe in Steemit.
I totally agree with the goal of a community should be more self-reliant and building up their Steem Power to support their own members.
As for payout reward for the community accounts expected to fully power up, this might be a bit difficult, as building a community takes a lot of time, planning, and organizing & administering a contest, especially if the participants or members are many. I think moderators who help in the process of building the community should be rewarded/incentivized with some portion of the payout reward, as I believe the majority of those coming to Steemit and offer to help to build a community expecting that their work is rewarded.
It seems that it is not easy, just look, almost all existing communities only empower a small group of community members, maybe even only their closest relatives, there needs to be an equal distribution of positive votes for members who have tried hard to work or create content so that no one feels abandoned by its own community.
To put it on behalf of the Steem Women club, we have understood your goal. That's why we get stronger by making SP for all the rewards you give. We hope that one day we will be high-voting communities without depending on you Our goal and goal is common. It pleases us that you inform us in this way. For the communities of the country, the biggest problem falls on the country representatives. Whoever is in Steemit must be a fair system. Vote for the employee and those who work. the communities of the country should also vote in this way. If not, why still there is a representative? I will provide equal support for both my community and people in my own country. Thanks for your support to us.
I agreed With You! Steemit needs people who wants to build and not just take money a leave.
I think people that work for You "CR" "curators" must encourage people to power Up
If You need a curator for a BETTER LIFE WITH STEEM PROJECT, I am available I have posted some Digest examples, and I am powering up every post I Made
If there is something that I can help With let me know
I totally agree with you sir , we should try our best to spread Steemit platform so that we could help more and more people and make them invest on steem
Start by getting to know your Country Representatives...
You only started in March, and looking at your wallet all you have done is cash out your SBDs.
I also 2 days ago thawed steem for expenses my dad was sick if I didn't need to charge I wouldn't thaw steem
🙏
I appreciate the encouraging words!
Communities are essential, to be sure. Let's consider how people USE the web, and social media. These days, very few people talk about being "ON Facebook" as a standalone idea. Most users have Facebook accounts so they can access groups or pages they are interested in. Nobody says "Join Facebook," people say "find my PAGE on Facebook," or perhaps "Join XYZ community on Facebook!" The base level Facebook has just become a framework, but not the star of the show. I believe Steemit is moving in that direction, as well... people will become directed towards country communities or interest groups, with Steemit merely being the "wrapper."
I'll probably write more about that, and on the code end, there might also be a place to support community development via subdomains: For example, the post was created via the Xpilar community... but for marketing purposes, why not have an actual domain called "xpilar.steemit.com?" Or any number of other things.... aceh.steemit.com, foodies.steemit.com, etc. Again, too much to explore and explain in a comment...
And then, the all-important issue of retention. It doesn't mean much to get a bunch of accounts created if their owners aren't actually active.
Agree very much. It will be good to see new developments.
We hope we will see more developments emerging from community developers as in the past with the likes of SteemPeak and SteemPress. Hopefully SteemField will be able to do that.
We look out to reward such endeavours and we are looking for a new set of community developers to come forward.
Thank you re the subdomain idea - we are exploring to see if that can be readily implemented.
Thank you
Hello @steemcurator01, I just recently reached 5,000SP and it's many thanks to you and the rest of the steemit team.
I'm planning to try out delegations for the first time and I'm impressed with @upvu in particular. I've made an enquiry and I found their offer very lucrative only that it includes daily upvotes.
Please what do you think? Is it vote buying? Or is the upvote just an extra given to a delegator in addition to daily steem tokens?
Thanks.
Why not curate yourself with your Steem Power, or delegate to one of the Communities if you don't want to do the curation yourself.
You are welcome to delegate to upvu, but we do not generally vote on posts voted for by upvu as it is not Proof of Brain.
Definitely.
You're completely understood. I guess I choose the 'curate myself' option.
Thanks @steemcurator01 for your time.
Please forgive me... I want to report the temporary statistics of Participants who have successfully registered as participants in the zoominar with the theme Promo-Steem Design With Zoom App | Zoominar Blogging Earn Money with Steemit
I am happy to read your writing @denmarkguy
The first social media I knew was Facebook in 2007, Facebook was very popular, I could communicate with other people and also share information, but I have not been very active on Facebook since 2014 because I felt that there was nothing interesting there. but i use facebook if there is something useful for me. like I did a steem ad there.
Regarding the community, building a community is very easy, but the challenge is how we manage and maintain people in the community.
sir @ stemmcurator I agree we will see the future growth of Steem.
But I have a little advice for a system to create a community on Steemit. Since I returned to being active, I saw so many communities on Steemit, some were large and some were also inactive and strangely enough, there were several communities with the same country community name.
it makes new users who join confused where to go, and if this continues and many communities of the same country are created. how do we keep them in the future? and how you will give them a fair vote in the future
I'm talking about state communities, not communities that are creative and have their own themes
regards
arie
Good point @arie.steem; perhaps one of the things that really needs to be addressed is a redesign of the Steemit user interface... it was designed and remains mostly unchanged since long before there were communities. If the future of Steemit is going to be communities, then the UX needs to be heavily invested in making both the navigation and community discovery process easier for those who are not familiar with the workings of the site.
Agree regarding country communities but we cannot prevent people from setting up new communities as they want.
We would like to see people working together in each country.
Ideally the Country Reps and the Promo Steem teams in each country can all come together in one unified country community.
Thank you
That is indeed my hope and I have also applied it to PromoSteem, an example that I can give for you as I am close to Anroja and El-Nailul and have worked together on the promosteem agenda at school.
the promoter ghana - mcsamm and nattybongo also works with steem ghana
philippine promoter - julstamban which also works with steemit philipine.
My target is definitely to have a lot of teams and many promoters from each country, however, I also have to see their track record and their activeness in contributing.
In the next few days, we will be publishing several new promoters from other countries.
thank you for your help so far
That is good.
that's true sir @steemcurator01 the aim of this steemit community is created for a better future program in the world of blockchain, and according to current developments that are so fast, soon this steemit will reach its heyday you have struggled for more than five years, now you will enjoy the fruits of your hard work, sir.
Over time I have tried to read many comments, but one thing that has become very clear is that every country should have a regional community, where all the country representatives will be active, then it will be much easier for everyone to guide new users. Because when there are multiple communities under multiple representatives in a country, new users get confused and try to stay active in multiple communities when it comes to support. As a result they fail to adopt the basic concept and cannot work with long term thinking. Because then their main focus is on getting rewards.
I myself have applied for CR, I want to work together on a platform with everyone in our country, so that as our relationship grows, we will be able to provide the right direction to new users in our country. And be able to get them interested in working with long-term thinking.
Power, Benefit and Rewards Problems have always been and will continue to be, but we must continue our efforts, because unity is strength. Yes, I am not against new communities, because new communities can play a good role in implementing new ideas. But I believe a common community for the country will be able to play a greater role.
Hi @steemcurator01
Hello Sir Assalamu Alaikum. I am new to Steemit. I have just finished class 12 and i am preparing for admission in the university. I am a child of a middle class family. I have many obstacles. I still want to move forward.
I want to do something for myself, I want to do something for the needy helpless people around me. So I want your help sir. I am new but I also write well. Please check my posts a little. And I must with the votes I get. I will power up.I am requesting you, sir, please check my posts once. I will take the time to post between my readings.

To have a strong community, depends on few key people and their relationship with new comers, how they accept, support and guide. That is why there are some people who become very popular blogger and even influencers. But a community is like a little family sometimes the "kids" grow up and leave the community too :)
You post is nominated for „Wold of xpilar“ Community Support Program, @booming account upvote. Only the posts that are not cross posted, original and posted from community page are eligible. If your post gets approval, then you get upvote within few days. Good luck!
Yes @stef1, and one of the important parts of what this group offers is that they always have the time to help and encourage a newcomer. In all the communities I have been part of, there have always been those few who might be the equivalent of "whales," but they were never too busy or too self important to be helpful... and, as such, they were always excellent "ambassadors" for the community.
Thanks for the Booming nomination, as always!
It is important to "accept, support and guide" newcomers; this is true and personally I feel glad as I have encouraged some talented youths to come here and become bloggers knowing they will get the proper encouragement and also some rewards they can use to solve problems, real problems in their real lives. I've been careful to explain they need to power up whenever they can, little by little, as this is an ecosystem and we all must contribute; this is not about taking only. All that said, it is also important to take care of those users who have been here for long and try to make the best of their blogs. I had been away for a while (long story); when I came back I felt lost; I got to think quality was not actually important always you kept posting. I felt sick in the stomach, I did. You've gotta post and post and post everyday so you are considered by some people who apparently control the upvotes. It was a nightmare; I stopped posting and remember why I had decided to keep a blog here in the first place: I do stuff that I want to share and it's work which I can get to be valued both morally and economically.
You cannot control who stays or leaves in a community, @stef1, but you can be a moral person, be honest and treat users with respect. I have found that on Steemit, too, fortunately.
Best regards :)
A good community is a community whose core consists of good members. Good members create an emotional connection to the community and some of its users. By this, they recognize they interact with real people, not with just the screen in front of them.
The connection also means they do their best as they do with people they know and friends, and it means they care about the community because it is a part of their social and emotional environment.
This means, as well, good members have happy moments in the community, the moments they feel they exist to the full extend.
I think there are special people who are natural community core members. I can see it in my life -- some people I met in the early 2000s on the internet, keep walking near me online all these years. Platforms were born and died but these people have always posted something, shared stories and photos. Most of them have no ambitions to become great writers or influencers. They just have a need to share stories and they have a developed ability to see and feel real people behind the screen.
I think you are very right about there being "core" community members and builders. There are quite a few people from my "early days" whom I am still in touch with... and by now, we have gone through births, deaths, kids in school and more together. Even so, maybe we live 10000km apart.
In many ways, these people "make" a community. If they decide to put their energy behind a project, it gives their followers confidence that they have become part of something real. Perhaps their "secret" is that making connections is as important to them as the actual process of creating content.
Discussions are a good accelerator of community growth, a good connector.
Not many lively discussions on steemit.
So maybe I should try this genre too once later.
Perhaps their "secret" is that making connections is as important to them as the actual process of creating content.
An interesting idea.
I can continue with an assumption that some types of personalities are represented among those community-builders oftener than among others. Some types of people have basic or more advanced skills of writers, bloggers, journalists, but not everyone chooses one of these professions, not everyone actually needs this sort of job. These folk not only tend to write but also are better at constructing virtual personalities in their heads. And this is how they can create good connections to community members -- they can mentally see them behind letters and numbers. They express this vision with words (ideas, emotions, attitude) and that makes the community be something real, as you said.
I like 16 personalities' classification (Myers–Briggs Type Indicator) and I sometimes try to understand people (and myself) by means of it. Would be interesting to test people who are active on steemit and to see what types are present here. I guess, this one can be found on blogging platforms like steemit.com oftener than in real life.
Just a theory.
I'm happy to see you here. I mean still here.
I left Steemit for 3 years and now I've returned.
But I miss old steemit
It's nice to see you back! In general, it's nice to see some of the people I was first here with (2017) returning to check in... it seems more and more are doing so.
I can guess it's because Steem as coin is pretty strong.
People didn't drain their wallets come to check for money, found some life here and stick here again ))
After almost a half year hiatus I'm glad to see the community is still kicking like this!
Some of us are still here, and plugging along. With the growth of individual communities, there are a lot more smaller niches than there used to be...
What made me join the steemit is all about reading and writing passion, but lately, as I see the people struggling around just to fulfill a daily need, then I initiate to make a @steem.amal to support those in need, not big but it works well so far. Since then, I also cash out some of the earning to support them, and some of them for powering up my account. Starting in 2018, and just cash out the SBD a couple of months ago since I rolling on the steem.amal program and support my daily.
What makes me stay because I feel the spirit of supporting each other in the real world especially since the pandemic of COVID-19. Even though I have set my earning to switch SBD to steem and powring up my account to ensure self-sufficiency one day, I plan to reach 10K before the end of the year. I know the support from @steemcurator01 is not always granted since the first time we create the community account of SteemSEA.
Why I keep continuing encouraging the member to keep posting even there is no big payout at all because more members of the community will bring more power to it.
Right now, I am supporting Venezuelans and other groups of steemians who is doing great things in helping others in need, but what we need to realize is we need to stick to the basic rules of being able to keep the platform grow, that is by powering up the account in any way possible such as swap SBD to Steem and power up.
Why do I join the community, it simply because I can share the same ideas, interests, and friendships. Since joining the steemSEA community I met the personal and become a big family of steemSEA, I told them many times that friendship is not only on steemit but also in the real world. Creating a real better life in the real world is not only by giving upvote, it can be in form of sharing the table in the coffee shop.
I met other steemian just after joining the steemSEA, long before I just knew them on the comment section, which is only on the platform @denmarkguy I was also involved in many other communities long ago, but not as real as the steem SEA.
While steem.amal is getting bigger, I have met many new steemians who have the same initiative and willing to support the steem.amal (Indonesian charity account). Recently I have reached 7k sp, by switching my SBD to power up the account and soon enough I will add 100 more sp to power up my account as well as a form of my commitment to building the steemit community stronger.
Thank you very much for encouraging quality and deep talk in the comment section @denmarkguy
Best Regards

Very interesting read. I found this post right on time as I just created a community few days ago and thinking of ways on how to grow it. Following you to learn more.
I never put much thought on how a community should be built until I created my own. My plan is not to market it straight away. Right now, I am just trying to make it interesting. I would prefer people join it because they find it interesting rather than anyother reason.
Hi and thank you for the opportunity to participate of a conversation covering these topics.
A good community is a place where all its members share an ideal and have agreed on a course of action to get their goals. It is essential then that the leaders take the education of their subscribers seriously, as they know better. What Steemit is about and what they are doing to make it live long and prosper are two key points as I see it. If members power up, they get more chances to contribute to the common goal. This isn't different from real life, you know --some people may forget it. We must be good, and we should like it, too.
Whenever I feel I don’t share the ideals of a community or that their methods are not compatible with mine, I must wish them good luck and go my way. Personally, I join in if I see quality posts are valued and subscribers take the time to visit your post and comment (and comment back). I see this and I think, OK this is a good community; there’s talent and there’s heart, and this is not about people’s relying on curators’ huge upvotes to cash and spend every cent.
Best regards :)
