Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 40: My Worst Highschool Experience.

In life, we have had experience in one way or the other as we live around people, expand our social circles and relationships. So passing through high school, then to university and even getting to work is a great journey filled with experiences both of the positive and the negative.

The name of the high school I attended is called Eastern Okobo High School. The school is located in Okobo local government area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

In those days, our school was known for having fine girls and they had good athletes, especially in track events. There are hardly any sporting events my school won't win trophies even at the state level.

I have many experiences. From the first day I went to that school, our Physical and Health Education teacher gave me beatings I'd never received before. It wasn't only me, though, for one thing I can't really remember. That already made me hate that school. That wasn't the school I wanted to attend, but something happened and I found myself there.

So, my worst experience was how our principal locked me inside his office and asked me to stay there and sing.

What happened?

So my friends and I were using headphones then to listen to some music (blues) by Westlife then, for those who could remember. It was during inter-house sports, while others were busy rehearsing for one event or the other, we were under a pine tree trying to score this Westlife song. Since I was sitting behind the school office building, I didn't see the principal walking towards me. The rest who saw him coming quickly left the place, leaving me there until the man walked up to me and asked me if that was what I came to school to do. He seized the headphones, the DVD player and the tape inside till today.

The worst is that those things weren't mine, they were my big cousins' own, so I took them to school to go and do some "show off." Hmmm! That's how this man took me to his office, asked me to sing the song I was singing out there. My people, I say I couldn't open my mouth to say anything, I just stood there till school was dismissed. When school was dismissed, he took his belongings and locked me inside, threatening to leave me in the office till the following day.

I don't know what came over me that day. I wasn't afraid, I just wasn't moved, I stood there like a mighty mountain. When he was tired, he went and opened his door and asked me to leave his office. I just exhaled, ran and left his office and headed straight home. Immediately, I got my bag.

Hmmm, the lesson I learnt from the incident. It was in the school environment, what I did wasn't what was required of me in the school environment.

• It was the period of inter-house sports where every student went for either personal or house rehearsal while I sat down to do what was not required of me. That was wrong. I have learnt that I should always be a team player, every time.

• When the school principal called me, I should have shown remorse or even apologised, but hell no, I didn't apologise. That was an insult on my side to the principal.

In all of that, humility should always be our watchword, be remorseful and apologise when you're wrong, which I failed to.
