Captain's Health Journey- S1-Ep.1- 'Searching for Vitamins'

In this series, I will use fictional stories to explain the Scientific research on various topics.

The goal is to provide reliable, and valid analysis of different health-related issues, in a light-hearted fashion. The character 'Captain Chris' plays the leading role in the series. He has a keen desire to live a healthier life.

On his journey, he will meet many 'health specialists' who will educate and guide him on nutrition, posture, sleep, exercise and all the other facets of health. Captain welcomes everyone to join him on his journey to health. Follow me @exercisinghealth to not miss out!

Introduction to C.C.:

Whats happening everyone. My name is Captain Chris. No, I'm not a sailor, in case you were wondering. I got the nickname from my GranDad. He calls me C.C for short. Hopefully, you will meet him down the line; he has a uniquely humorous view on life.

Ep. 1 Overview

For a long time, I wondered if multi-vitamins are necessary for our health and well-being? The journey in answering this question led me to a farm, a nutritionist as well as the country, Egypt.

Defining deficiency:

Vita-mins, vite-a-mins, do we really need them?

I always thought a well-balanced diet of whole grains and all the other stuff, was enough.

Well, then, why did the American Medical Association put out statements saying:' Most people do not consume an optimal amount of vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence from randomised trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements'.

Then I watched a video of Dr. Glidden, a nature-path, speak about how the food we eat is nutrient deficient, due to the nutrient deficient soil they grew in. He also mentioned how eating a bunch of gluten found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats, compromises the small intestine's job at absorbing the little nutrients left in the food. The combination of weak crop and compromised absorption, render us helpless in meeting our Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) from food alone. I recommend you watch the interview of the good Doc, posted below.

Sh+%!!

Aren't grains supposed to be the base of the food pyramid though??

Well, they were, until the USDA changed the Pyramid in 2005 to one of the most complicated puzzles I've ever seen.

Farmer Brown:

So I went down to the local farmer to find out if this is all true. He was a wheat farmer by the way. I explained my worries to him, and he was like.

" There are two issues you must understand. Every year I'm growing the same crops, which require a set of nutrients... without diversity in my crop, those sets of nutrients will eventually run dry."

"I do feed them with some commercial fertilizers, but they lack many of the micronutrients needed for real strong crop."

"Without a healthy plant, I'm more susceptible to losing the entire yield to disease, weeds or pests."

"So now I am forced to use GMO crops which are resistant to the herbicides and pesticides I need to spray on them."

"There is a tiny little problem to that though. Instead of just killing the unwanted pests, I destroy the entire soil micro-biome, even the beneficial bugs."

"These good guys are supposed to eat the minerals in the soil and turn them into digestible nutrients for the plants. In other words, without them, the ground lays dormant in every way."

"But you know, with more than 7 billion mouths to feed now, Including my families, my hands are pretty much tied."

Well, that was informative....

Recap:

Okay, so what I now know is:

1. Our soil is nutrient deficient, making our plants nutrient deficient.

Next, I went to a nutritionist, Doc. Wolf, to Get the low down on whole grains.

To be continued....

Can't help but notice a lot of of the other replies seem to be generic or bot replies - all supportive, which is nice, but I'd guess you'd like something more human?

Don't worry, I'm human (enough) ;)

I like this post, as the connection seems so obvious once you point it out. Plants must get nutrition from somewhere, like maybe the soil, and so if the soil doesn't have nutrients, how can the plants have them?

I'm actually really interested in if you're familiar with compost - does the area you live in accept compost, and does compost significantly help fix this problem of soil not having enough nutrients?
