Shallow
Greetings Steemians,
I like to think about the meaning behind words.
There are certain words I try to refrain from using, such as:
Under-stand, because to me this word equates to being beneath someone. Instead I like to say comprehend. I still use the word understand at times, as removing a word from your vocabulary is definitely a challenge.
A good practice that was taught to me (I forget where) is to think about the line you are going to speak/write, prior to saying it. It's something I do not practice regularly, but I do think it is a wise practice nonetheless.
Recently someone I care about referred to themselves as shallow.
I don't think she is.
I have my own definition of what shallow is, and it sure wasn't what the Merriam-Webster dictionary had to say.
Let's check it out:

Heavy stuff right?
And none of it is a great self descriptor in my opinion.
The definition that stands out most to me is: lacking in depth of knowledge, thought, or feeling.
It's my opinion that far too often we utilize words with "cookie cutter meanings", oftentimes, the true definition remains hidden.
Only... none of it is hidden, the truth is in plain sight, all one must do is search.
Until next time, much love!
I think it's vital we agree upon what the meaning of words are, and use words correctly. This is the basis of communication and without it we can't hope to have a functioning society or even useful discussions. People using words randomly and inappropriately today is one major cause of problems between us. I'm reminded of the concept of Newspeak/doublethink from 1984. Words become misused and twisted until they mean the opposite of what they once did, rendering all previous discussion, writings, memories etc obsolete. We're part way there now!
So, thank you for taking care to define your terms clearly. : )
Great point, I wholeheartedly agree! Bad habits spread like wild fire too. Some might think that something like "lol" or "tbh" is not a big deal, until you're having a real life conversation with someone and they literally say "laugh out loud."
It's only my opinion too, that text based conversations being so prevalent today is also not a good thing. I have some strict personal "rules" when it comes to conversation, (in terms of people I know in real like, have each others phone numbers) I have a "no text" policy for anything that is not simple one liners. My reason is because inflection cannot be read properly, and how we perceive text, is an inner projection of how we "think" we are being addressed. I get met with almost hostility, people do not like to make phone calls anymore, at least in my world.
Yes, and I'm also reminded of the movie Idiocracy. Oh we know how Hollywood rolls though don't we...
Thank you for your great comment my friend! :)
Nice. It's a great idea to have guidelines for communication like that. I have some rules around other people's use of smart devices in my home. And certain people I just don't communicate in certain ways, like my parents I only want to speak with in person, by phone, or email. Nothing else works... and sometimes those don't even :P
I often find myself using words as my own descriptive meanings, and sometimes it isn’t even the right definition. Also maybe one might find themselves shallow, while someone takes the Danes reasons why someone may think that way, but label them completely different. Great food for thoughtbro!
Thanks a bunch for the thoughtful comment bro. Great points! I like to remind myself that our perceptions are unique. I can never claim to know what or how another is thinking, and when I think that I do know, the thought of infinite variables comes to mind.
Thanks again! :)
Hello Jake, how are u doing? Words always create a perception for someone. I sometimes don't like a harsh word. I prefer smooth and polite words .. Have a nice day, my friend.
Hi my friend,
I am well, I hope you are also well.
I love the way you think, I agree!
I always tell people that text messages cannot be read properly, because of unique perception. You are a very smart woman.
Thank you always for your thoughtful comments my friend. Have a great day!
