Check out etherdelta.com, your keys are not stored by them, so even if they go, tokens are recoverable.
You are correct, I don't use coinbase.com for trading. Binance and Cryptopia are both great exchanges, but they are centralized and if they go (for any reason), you loose.
I hope we see more decentralized exchanges in the near future.
