Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #7
Greetings friends of Steemit and Steem-Agro
What are the different types of cassava varieties, differentiate them in terms of yield, disease resistance, etc |
---|
Cassava is a staple crop in Africa, and there are several varieties that differ in terms of yield, disease resistance, and other characteristics. Here are some of the main types of cassava varieties found in Africa:
Common Cassava Varieties
Variety | Maturity period | Yield | Tolerance to CBSD | Resistance to Drought |
---|---|---|---|---|
NASE 14 | 12-18 months | 25-30 T/ha | Not very tolerant | Resistant |
NASE 19 | 12-18 months | 25-30 T/ha | Not very tolerant | Resistant |
NARO CASS 1 | 12-18 months | 25-45 T/ha | Tolerant | Resistant |
NARO CASS 2 | 12-18 months | 30-35 T/ha | Not very tolerant | Resistant |
Abbreviation
CBSD= Cassava Brown Streak Disease
T/ha= Tons per hectare

What are some post-harvest handling and processing techniques of cassava tubers? |
---|
Delayed post-harvest physiological deterioration (PPD). The estimated loss of cassava is nearly 1/3 of world wide harvest due to PPD. PPD symptoms starts within 24 hrs of harvesting. The roots become unfit for consumption within 2-3 days after harvest. An enzymatic, endogenous oxidative process is responsible for the PPD of cassava roots. Conventionally waxing of fresh cassava roots and poly bagging with suitable fungicides may relief to certain extent.
