Thank God It Made It
I am very happy today because one on Mercy’s kit made it, it survived. A week ago Mercy put to bed and had 8 kits. Two days after giving birth she must have stepped on one of the kits as she was feeding them inside the nest box because the kit looked flat out and was already dead by the time I came to check on them in the morning, it is her first time of giving birth so you can understand her child care management skills. When I came to check on them yesterday morning I discovered that one of the kit had crawled away from others and was struggling to turn itself over because it somehow entangled itself with the old newspaper used in making the nest box.
The Concern
When the kits suck during the period their mother breastfeeds them, you normally notice their stomach is very big and shiny, if their fur haven’t started coming you could even notice some of the vain as the circulate fluid because it is looking like a puffed up balloon that is about to pop. But if the kit was unable to suck you’ll notice that it looks dried up and malnourished and that was the situation of the kit that had wondered off to a different section of the nest box. The nature of female rabbits when it comes to feeding their kit is that they only do it once or twice a day and if the kit is well feed it can stay 24 hour without food and not be at the risk of dying from starvation. They only go into the nest box when they want to feed their young and after that they stay away from them. Once in the nest box she positions herself in such a way that the kits can easily locate her teeths/nipple/breast (whichever is easy to understand, lol) and start sucking like mad. So you can understand my concern when I noticed that one of the kits was not fed because it wondered off.
It Made It
When I went to sleep last night it was still looking sickly, pale and malnourished, it was actually looking half the size of the brothers and sisters. So I woke up early this morning and rushed to see if it was alive or dead, but to my greatest surprise I couldn’t differentiate which of the pinkish ones was not feed. They all had their tummy shining as if oil was rubbed on it. Lol. Thank God it made it was the next thing that came out of my mouth.

It's good that everything worked out. It is always a pity when helpless creatures suffer. Thank you for the interesting post.
Thanks for reading my friend, I do appreciate your comments.
Honestly if you did not mention that they are baby rabbits I would have thought they were kittens
Perhaps not having newspapers there could be a good thing and finding other substitute can be looked upon.
Hopefully when they are bigger Mercy will allow you to have a closer shot of the kits too.
Congrats for the survived kit. Sorry that one of them did not make it.

Someone that has cat has one mentioned that she thought they were kittens. Probably they have the same ancestry. Before going for d newspapers we're tried other stuff like saw dust, rags, dried grasses & others but old newspapers seem to work best especially in situations where the mom doesn't pull enough fur. Thanks for your support you are appreciated.

I actually would have thought dried grass would have been the standard. I guess the newspapers did well.

When I used dried grass they kept chewing on they and bits keeps falling through the wires some much that they bearly had anything to inside the next box. With the newspapers they don't create such mess as they don't chew it. What affect the kit that wasn't feed was an issue of wondering away from the other kits, this can take a long time & when their mom comes to feed them she just stays where the large group is, a kit trying to get back might take a long time and by the time it finally gets there the mother may have left.
