St. Petka - Imprinted by LightCaptured
"Petka" is a name with interesting etymology, well, at least for me ;)
It is the female version of the biblical name Peter (Rock).
I think that name exists only in Bulgarian, but probably I am wrong, some other Slavonic languages as well.
So let me share with you few photos from the church of Saint Petka in Varna, Bulgaria.
To tell you the truth, when I visited Varna, I wasn't searching for it but while we were walking around and enjoying the city architecture, we stumbled upon it but as there wasn't any service we couldn't get inside.
Hopefully, on the next visit it will be open.

Wonderful pictures of this beautiful building!
Petka is a very strange name, indeed. I have never met a living person with that name. I think it is only about this saint, who, also strangely, is actually called Paraskeva and the Bulgarian version of her name is Petka. I would correct you that this is not the feminine form of Peter, but the feminine form of Petko, and the etymology of Petko is 'Friday', although in one place it really says that Petko comes from Peter. There is some logic, but not entirely.
Well, basically folk stuff doesn't make much sense anyway.😂
Thank you!
It's really entertaining how we, the "modern" people try to "fix" the ancient names so they sound in a more "fashion" way.
I know people who are called "Petra" and that's, I think, an internationally accepted female name.
You are maybe right, but don't you think "Petko" is just an informal version of "Peter"? :DDD
It all makes a lot od sense! :P

I can't actually find any connection between the names Paraskeva and Petka, so this "translation" doesn't make sense to me at all. On the other hand, it is logical that Petko is the diminutive of Peter, but in fact, if we take the Bulgarian point of view again and translate Petko, it is logical that it comes from the word Petak, i.e. Friday.
The name Peter cannot be translated into Bulgarian, because there are no hints anymore, but everything is ala-bala, I think that is already clear now 😂
I always wondered, for example, where Sasho, as a diminutive of Alexander, came from.🤔
And by the way, I find the female name Petra very beautiful, unfortunately it is not very common in Bulgaria. Well, Petka is not common either🤣🤣🤣
