The genetic modification of vegetables is something that has been carried out for years by several companies to improve the qualities and yield of crops with a lot of controversy on the part of their detractors who do not trust the safety of these products.

La modificación genética de vegetales es algo que hace ya años que se viene realizando por parte de varias empresas para mejorar las cualidades y rendimiento de los cultivos con bastante polémica por parte de sus detractores que no confían en la inocuidad de estos productos.

These are the so-called transgenics in which genes from other animal and plant organisms are introduced to modify the properties of food both at a nutritional level and at the level of resistance to pests and inclement weather that can damage crops.

Estos son los llamados transgénicos en los que se introducen genes de otros organismos tanto animales como vegetales para modificar las propiedades de los alimentos tanto a nivel nutricional como a nivel de resistencia a plagas e inclemencias climáticas que pueden dañar los cultivos.

The particularity of this tomato variety is that no gene from another species has been introduced to it, but its genetic information has been "corrected" using the well-known CRISPR-Cas9 genetic editing tool, in this case to increase its GABA production.

La particularidad de esta variedad de tomate es que no se le ha introducido ningún gen de otra especie sino que se ha "corregido" su información genética utilizando la ya conocida herramienta de edición genética CRISPR-Cas9, en este caso para incrementar su producción de GABA.

GABA are the initials of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter that acts as an inhibitor of the nervous system, decreasing its activity, which reduces the neuronal excitement produced by stress or anxiety, in addition to reducing the high blood pressure that is the cause of many diseases.

This tomato variety has been created by the Japanese company SanaTechSeed and, although it is not the first genetically edited product with CRISPR, it is the first to be authorized for consumption since last September 15, although at the moment only in Japan.

Esta variedad de tomate ha sido creada en la empresa japonesa SanaTechSeed y, aunque no es el primer producto editado con CRISPR, es el primero que se autorizó para su consumo desde el pasado 15 de septiembre aunque de momento solo en Japón.

The synthesis of GABA depends on a protein called Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) that has at the end of its molecule a self-inhibiting domain that regulates the enzymatic activity of this protein, eliminating this inhibitor with CRISPR, the tomato produces GABA constantly.

El tomate en muchos sitios es un cultivo de alto riesgo que puede conllevar grandes pérdidas si este avance mejora en gran medida esos riesgos seguramente sea aceptado rápidamente.

Thank you for such an interesting post I did not know anything about that tomato, I particularly do not agree with the genetic manipulation in laboratories of food, animals and humans, I think that in the long run can bring serious consequences, nature is perfect and genetic manipulation is a way in which man tries to supposedly correct something that is already perfect, I insist that this is my personal opinion, because I know well that this is considered an advance and is part of science but I have my doubts.

Hello @mauromar, This news about the commercialization of transgenic tomatoes is amazing, already knowing that this could be a solution to create resistance to pests, I think it will win both fans and people against this idea, but in the end it is a great technological advance and I think that It would be a big step to also achieve transgenic foods that can be grown and harvested in adverse climatic zones.
