Glenn Phillips led the charge for New Zealand's bowling attack, claiming four crucial wickets on the opening day of the Sylhet Test after Bangladesh made a solid start with Mahmudul Hasan scoring 86.
Bangladesh could only manage to reach 310 for 9 before play was delayed owing to poor light at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, despite last-ditch efforts from Taijul Islam (9 not out) and Shoriful Islam (13).
Anticipating the importance of spin in the game, Tim Southee had predicted its crucial role before the match. The trio of Ajaz Patel (2-76), Ish Sodhi (1-71), and Glenn Phillips (4-53) lived up to expectations, claiming seven wickets collectively. New Zealand seamer Kyle Jamieson also contributed with figures of 2 for 52.
Mahmudul Hasan was the standout performer for the hosts, smashing 11 boundaries and forming valuable partnerships – 53 with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (37) for the second wicket and 88 with Mominul Haque (37) for the third. Bangladesh reached 104 for 2 at lunch.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, after hitting two boundaries and three sixes, fell victim to Phillips as he danced down the wicket recklessly, giving Phillips his maiden Test wicket. Mominul Haque, after a shaky start, was caught behind by Phillips, initiating a collapse that saw Bangladesh lose four wickets for 53 runs.

Phillips continued his impact by dismissing Shahadat Hossain (24) and Nurul Hasan (29), putting the middle order under pressure as Bangladesh lost three wickets for 29 runs before stumps.
