Movie Review: Us (2019)

In the horror movie genre it's hard to find something that stands out from the crowd of movies. Most of the time the movies have the same sequence and even the same story, more or less, as if that's the way it has to be. That's why I rarely watch horror movies. If you've seen countless movies before, you bored and already know what's happening and how it ends. But Jordan Peele's works are a bit different. Already with his movie Get Out he could bring a new positive wind into this genre. And so I was curious about his new movie Us.

The Story:

When Adelaide Wilson was still a little girl, her happened something on a beach that she seems to have repressed herself. Years later, as a mother of two children and wife of Gabe, she are now on holiday with her family in a nearby summer cottage. She's restive but she tries to enjoy it for the love of her family. Her friends family, who are also in a summer cottage, are with them.

But the pleasure of the holidays is over one night, when suddenly in the summer cottage the electricity fails and four strange figures, hand holding, stand in front of the door. It doesn't take long for these figures to gain violently access to the house and reveal that they look like the Wilson's...

My Opinion:

The movie offers a lot of material to discuss, because like it was in Get Out too, and has more to offer than just horror, but even after the credits you start to think about it. Before that you're actually too busy with the movie and what's happening or you just sit there excited to see what's going to happen next. The movie is really good, well played by the actors and has its own humor, which works, though. There are also unexpected twists that don't rob the movie of its suspense and cause some surprises. At the beginning the movie also takes a lot of time until it really starts. But that's good, because you get to know the characters better and then you can have a better time with them - whether it's the children, who always argue, the somewhat childish father or the caring and protective mother - you feel with them.

But the film also has its own cracks. Sometimes it seems very lengthy and stretches itself into the length. Like in Get Out Jordan Peele tries to show more than just horror again and at the end of the movie it gets too much because it takes away the credibility of the movie, even though the profound ideas are well placed. You can watch the movie several times to try to understand the whole thing, but I personally won't, not yet, but in the near future.

But that doesn't make the movie bad. On the contrary, it's a somewhat unusual kind of horror movie and that's what makes it so special. At some points the movie is scary, funny, thrilling and offers a lot of material for interpretation and therefore also for discussions. The level of creepiness, however, drops towards the end of the movie. Nevertheless, this movie is one of the better horror movies of the last years, just because of its idea, which is why you should watch the movie in a calm and darkened atmosphere.

At IMDb the movie got 7 stars from me.

Hello @oendertuerk, I have enough with your opinion that it is very good, since I do not like horror movies, thanks for sharing it...

Hi @oendertuerk,

Thanks for sharing your movie review on "Us”. You’ve just got a full upvote from us.

I am personally not a big fan of horror or scary movies, but it's understandable that the general plot sometimes gets repetitive or cliche. Would you say that Jordan Peele's movies are unorthodox / unconventional, in the sense of the general plot?

First of all Thank You for looking by and also for your nice upvote @bluebaikal.

Well, the process is already orthodox, Affected People -> Danger -> Survive, you'll never be able to change that, this is what horror films and films of other genres have in common and without that this kind of films cannot live, but the story behind it is very unorthodox and not mainstream moderate, which invites you to a discussion and just to name one: Social class differences.
