Between 1600 and 1800, Canada’s pioneer era was defined by the imperial rivalry and foundational exploration of France and Britain. While French settlers established the permanent agricultural society of New France, British fur traders and later Loyalists pushed boundaries, ultimately leading to British dominance by 1763.
The French Era (1608–1763)
Key Explorers & Settlement: Samuel de Champlain established the first permanent settlement at Québec City in 1608. French pioneers, known as habitants (farmers) and filles du roi (women sent to marry settlers), built an agricultural society along the St. Lawrence River.
The Fur Trade: Explorers and traders, such as the coureurs des bois and voyageurs, navigated inland rivers to trade with Indigenous peoples like the Huron-Wendat, Ojibwe, Cree, Ottawa, etc

In 1600- 1800’s the British and French worked closely with the local Anishinaabe , Ojibwe , Cree, to establish the Fur Trade routes from Montreal to to the Pacific. They founded the North West Company and Hudson Bay Company and built the North American Economy along the Voyageur routes across Canada and the USA
