UNDERSTANDING GOOD LEADERSHIP, PART 2.

in #life7 years ago (edited)

A couple of days ago, I wrote about Understanding leadership from the view point of  Robin Sharma. We noted 3 cardinal attributes of a good leader as influential, inspirational and ability to make impact.

Today, I want us to carefully examine this statement credited to Lao Tzu.

Lao Tzu was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, the founder of philosophical Taoism, and a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. He once said:

A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.

Examining this statement from where I stand, 3 important qualities typically come to mind: humility, selflessness and then again inspirational. A good leader should not be the type who is quick to take credit for a good job done. If for anything at all, they should be willing to accept responsibilities for failures. By convincing your followers that your success is as a result of the individual efforts and contribution of everyone (which is usually the case), you turn to boost their morale and also uplift their confidence level. Your followers feel that they are making valuable and significant contributions to the success of the group, this in itself is motivation.

Also, it's important for a good leader to be selfless (having, exhibiting or motivated by no concern for oneself but for others). It's a natural instinct for each of us to want to look out for ourselves and to want to put our interest first. But once you are a leader, you do not just represent your own interest, but that of the group you lead. That is why selflessness is key.

I have been in leadership roles for a quite a while now and I know how difficult it is to get things done because you need to understand everyone's motivation and how to get the work done. But before that, what one needs to know about oneself as what kind of character am I playing? One needs to ask himself/herself that "Am I the kind of person people look forward to? Am I the one who can drive people to get to what the goal is? Am I likeable enough that people will listen to me? Have I contributed to their growth or have I made them aware of their importance in my life or the project I am working on? Am I grateful enough to them for what they have contributed?"

All these questions tell just one thing that to be able to drive people, one needs to be consistent in improving oneself so as to get better and better to inspire and when your people love you genuinely, you automatically achieve success and become more humble.

We can literally earn and achieve anything in life, if we have the ability to inspire and earn people.
And the key to all this is being grateful for everything and everyone around. Being immensely grateful certainly helps.
