What Happens When I Take A Tolerance Break

in #cannabis6 years ago (edited)

Recently , I fielded a great question from another Steemian, @massmedicinals.

As I began to craft my response, I thought the question was worthy of an independent post.

I also wanted to start a community conversation related to the topic of taking a break from using cannabis.

When a person takes a break from using cannabis, the process is known as taking a tolerance break.

Here’s the original question:

I am curious to ask what it's like for you, the first week after your break from cannabis. I think you described in a previous post about the physical impact the holiday from cannabis has on you. Hope that's not intruding too much. But hearing real accounts of how cannabis helps people is something I care a lot about.

Great post!
@massmedicinals

Here’s my response:

First of all, I use cannabis to treat an autoimmune disease called Multiple Sclerosis.

I was diagnosed 15 years ago and before I discovered that I could use cannabis to successfully treat the disease, I’d had 3 major episodes with it.

This included having some mobility issues and I have lost the sight (completely) in both of my eyes.

(Thankfully, not at the same time...but have been declared legally blind in both eyes on separate occasions.)

Once I started to eat cannabis, I haven’t had a single attack and have been living a “normal” life without any loss of function since 2007.

My vision completely restored to 20/20.

I’ve never had to take any pharmaceutical medications to treat the disease.

Technically, I’ve been stoned every day for almost 12 years...with the exception of taking 7-10 days off for a tolerance break, once a year.

I try to do this annually, as a way to reset my cb1 and cb2 receptors.

The endocannabinoid system is self-regulating.

This means that the system itself, controls the physical number of receptors which are available for the cannabinoids to bind to, on the cellular level.

If a person is regularly exposing their cells to cannabinoids daily, the cells will retract and shut off some of their receptors. When the receptors are retracted they aren’t available to bind with any cannabinoids.

If you think of the receptors like docking stations for THC and CBD, this means that with regular exposure some of the receptors will be completely closed for business.

Usually people try to break for 30 days to really reset all their receptors but that’s admittedly bloody hard to do with illnesses.

Once a person realizes just how good their body can feel when it’s not functioning with deficiencies, they don’t want to go back to that place.

Ever.

If left untreated, I have severe insomnia (as part of my symptoms) and brutal muscle spasms in my legs.

When I take a tolerance break, the first thing that happens is that I stop sleeping.

I’m lucky to get 3 hours a night.

My body then tries to pull as much stored THC and other cannabinoids out of my fat cells.

Now, like most chronics and people who don’t eat much sugar/carbs, I run lean. Read: not much body fat.

Night sweats ensue...not sleeping and completely drenched in my own perspiration is the result with muscle spasms thrown in, every night until I medicated with cannabis again.

(“Sign me up for that!” said no one ever. Lolz!)

The benefits do outweigh the negatives...(that’s what I tell myself anyway.)

Benefits:

After a 7-10 day abstinence, I require less than half of my highest cannabis titration level to achieve the same disease management results.

Less Than Half

If I don’t make an effort to reset my receptors, I just have to keep taking more cannabis to achieve the same results.

This is one of the reasons why we end up with people who have large daily prescriptions for cannabis. Many of my friends have double digits (in gram weight) daily prescriptions.

When we choose to take a break, there are things that one can do to lessen the blow while the receptors are resetting themselves.

I normally try to travel to a destination that I know will be sunny and warm. I exercise outside everyday and focus on keeping my body well hydrated and nourished with nutritionally dense food.

It’s tough to convince someone to take these measures but it is all about respecting the plant medicine, the human body and how both were and are designed to work together.

I welcome your comments and I invite you to contribute to the discussion.

Thanks again to @massmedicinals for starting the conversation...

Even as a rec user a tolerance break is important. I take a break when I can suck down a 1g preroll flying solo and barely get a buzz or than 1g of dab goes in a flash.

It starts to take a toll on my expenses gradually and it takes the fun out of it when I have to spend more time to get the same effect.

I have some patient friends that a 1/4g dap hit at once is what it takes. Sometimes they chain smoke bowls or prerolls just because they have to have the levels high enough to fight the good fight.

Tolerance breaks are good in general. Even if you are someone like me who needs a couple Tylenol to get moving.. After a while it goes from 2-3 caplets in a dose once a day to twice or even more.

You got this. Happy healing. Mwah!

Thanks for your great comments @justinashby!

That brings up another part of this, and that is changing up what forms of cannabis you actually consume. I know I feel different when I smoke dried herb versus vaping it.
Different when I burn hash and concentrates and different again when I eat it. I try not to get stuck on any one particular thing even though my preference is to eat it. (Concentrates second, with decent hash coming in a close third.)
Often I am stacking one on top of the other...but you can only get as high as your available receptors will let you get.
People often ask me what the difference “in high“ there is from cannabis clocking in at a 10% THC for $10/gram versus 25% THC for $17/gram.
I usually say $7 more and intensity of flavour.
If you’re not interested in flavour than $10/gram will get the job done just as well , provided the person likes how the strain smells.
Theoretically, a person shouldn’t have to use as much of the strain containing 25% THC but I always tend to smoke or vape to the bowl size and have never used less physical plant material....which is why I grow my own for pennies on the dollar (so to speak). Hahaha! This girl refuses to run out if she can help it.

Don't you mean nickels on the dollar? I thought pennies have gone extinct in Canada. ;)

Lolz! Yeah, I guess I better step up to the reality that’s it’s nickels on the dollar, these days. ;)

As one of us suffers from the same MS symptoms, and has a similar story, we unfortunately understand.
You pretty much said it all, here!
Except perhaps that some medical users should take great care with tolerance breaks. In some instances, it could kill the patient fairly quickly. But those patients usually already know they can't take tolerance breaks, so mentioning it might not be necessary at all. Just something to think about! Thankfully, cannabis is saving MANY lives. We're thankful for the black (free) market in Canada, which is keeping so many people alive and functioning right now. The legalized market just announced they may be sold out for DECADES. What in the actual f***?
Keep it lifted : )

Thanks for mentioning that key point that I missed.
You are absolutely correct. There are many people who simply are not well enough to take a tolerance break.
Doing so, may mean certain death.
Thank you for raising that topic (because I do as much as I bitch about it, really feel fortunate about being well enough to be able to take a break.)
Many cannot.
I have included a very detailed response to @massmedicinals that might be of interest to your group. Please find the thread below. ;)

Will do! Thank you for all your great posts. You're an inspiration on the blockchain and we salute you.
There's so much hope for MS and other neurological illnesses, and autoimmune conditions, which previously were considered mainly untreatable. We think there's decent reason to be hopeful for treatments that prolong quality healthy lifespan to the point where we'll eventually be able to cure it completely. MS may have already done its worst to humanity, which is a very good thing, as you know it's no picnic.
Cannabis is part of that hope! And people like us (you, us, other activists and leaders) are instrumental in that. Ambassadors of weed!!

Little Girl
I am taking a tolerance break now.
It has been a long time now.
Years.
Ugh on that.
Thank you

Francis

My tolerance breaks are due to lack of affording my 'medication'. It happens every other week and sucks ass! My anxiety, depression and bipolar emotions roar back to front stage every time.

Hi @fracasgrimm!
Yeah, I have to concur that symptoms that roar right back at you, do suck.
Can you grow legally where you are?

(That’s really the most inexpensive way to medicate.)

As a patient my wife can legally, but as a clause in our lease..we can not

There is so much valuable information here that I had to forward it to a few people I know that would likely derive some benefit from this information.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all your kindness and support @happyme.
You’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know. ;)

I get great pleasure from knowing that I made a positive difference in someone's life. Your words made my day! Thank-you!
