Miris, the 6 historic sites are totally destroyed in the turmoil of war

The circulation of images of historical sites in Syria destroyed by ISIS made the public world sad. Because the places that were destroyed and looted by this extremist group kept an invaluable history. Some of them even include the UNESCO World Heritage Site. But most of them are now just ruins.

1. Cyrene, Libya

Cyrene had become an important city during the heyday of ancient Greece and Rome. The city was founded in 630 BC and houses a variety of old buildings with amazing architecture, including complex necropolises. No wonder that this historic building complex was crowned as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1982.

1. Al-Askari Mosque, Iraq

The Al-Askari mosque in Samarra's old town is one of the most important sites for Shiites in Iraq. Al-Askari is characterized by a striking golden dome. The building also became one of the largest mosques in the world.

Al-Askari had been targeted by bomb attacks three times. Two attacks that occurred in 2006 and 2007 almost leveled the building of the mosque with the ground. In 2007, restoration efforts were undertaken by the governments of Iraq and Turkey. There was a problem in the refurbishment process, but the gold dome of Al-Askari was finally restored in 2009.
