Miris, the 6 historic sites are totally destroyed in the turmoil of war

in #world7 years ago

The circulation of images of historical sites in Syria destroyed by ISIS made the public world sad. Because the places that were destroyed and looted by this extremist group kept an invaluable history. Some of them even include the UNESCO World Heritage Site. But most of them are now just ruins.

In addition to the historical sites that were leveled with the land by ISIS, there are still many other archeological treasures that were destroyed in the war of war. Here are some of them, quoted from CNN.

  1. Cyrene, Libya

Cyrene had become an important city during the heyday of ancient Greece and Rome. The city was founded in 630 BC and houses a variety of old buildings with amazing architecture, including complex necropolises. Cyrene is also home to the temples of Apollo, Zeus, and Demeter featuring magnificent architectural designs. No wonder that this historic building complex was crowned as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1982.

Unfortunately, the city of Cyrene was bulldozed in the early days of the Libyan Revolution. A lot of broken building debris can not be restored. More sadly, the surrounding residents destroyed the remnants of the Cyrene necropolis in 2013 for the construction of roads leading to residential areas. Hundreds of domes and artifacts were thrown away in the trenches.

  1. Buddha Statue of Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan

In the Bamiyan Valley, the Hindu Kush Mountains, Afghanistan had two remarkable Buddhist remains. Two gigantic Buddha statues became a tapestry of cliffs in the Bamiyan Valley. The two Buddha statues were carved in 507 and 554. But the splendor of the Buddha Bamiyan statue is now only a story.

The Taliban intend to destroy all non-Islamic historical heritage. The United Nations had time to request that they not destroy the Buddha Bamiyan statue that has important historical value. But the request was answered with total destruction. In March 2001, Taliban forces destroyed both statues with bombs. They drilled holes in the statue's structure, planted dynamite and blew it up.

  1. Palmyra, Syria

UNESCO calls Palmyra an oasis in the middle of the Syrian desert. Reported by CNN, the ruins of this Aramaic heritage city store high-value historical buildings with architecture that has been very advanced in his day. The temple there features a mixture of Greco-Roman and Persian architecture styles.

But this city had fallen into the hands of ISIS for a year and has lost almost the rest of its glory. Most of the artifacts, ancient buildings, and other historical relics have been destroyed by ISIS troops in an anti-iconoclastic cleansing effort. While some ancient statues allegedly have been circulated in the black market of Europe.

  1. Al-Askari Mosque, Iraq

The Al-Askari mosque in Samarra's old town is one of the most important sites for Shiites in Iraq. Al-Askari is characterized by a striking golden dome. The building also became one of the largest mosques in the world.

Al-Askari had been targeted by bomb attacks three times. Two attacks that occurred in 2006 and 2007 almost leveled the building of the mosque with the ground. In 2007, restoration efforts were undertaken by the governments of Iraq and Turkey. There was a problem in the refurbishment process, but the gold dome of Al-Askari was finally restored in 2009.

In 2014, it was ISIS's turn to launch a bomb attack on the mosque. In addition to casualties, the bomb blast was not to destroy the building of the mosque.

  1. Old Beirut, Lebanon

Once dubbed the Paris of the Middle East, the city of Beirut lost its beauty of high historical value because of the war. The civil war for 15 years and the conflict with Israel has destroyed hundreds of buildings that became cultural heritage.

Old buildings in old Beirut are famous for their unique blend of Ottoman, French and Art Deco styles. But of the 1200 buildings that once adorned the corners of Beirut, now only 400 left.

In addition to the civil war that destroyed Beirut from every aspect, it is now an age-old development that endangers the preservation of historic buildings in Beirut.

  1. Stari Most, Bosnia - Herzegovina

Stari Most is a famous bridge that became one of the tourist icons in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The bridge is the work of the famous architect Mimar Sinan, regarded as the best example of Balkan Islamic architecture.

Stari Most stood for 427 years before being destroyed by Croatian troops on 9 November 1993. The destruction of Stari Most helped mark the turmoil of the Croatian-Bosnian War.

After the war, reconstruction of the bridge is done. Stari Most reopened to the public on July 23, 2004.
