Robotic surgery in Fife

Hello my dear Steemians,

Today I wanted to bring up the service that is quickly developing in the hospital where I am working in VHK Hospital and in our NHS Fife Trust (National Health Service). In UK the health system is publicly funded and if there is any innovation that hospitals would like to implement in order to improve the health of people, the our dep-t leads but also the NHS management produce a request and that is submitted to government. Luckily we can not complain about the lack of support from government of Scotland, majority of the requests were funded and that is why we have modern and up-to-date materials and equipment.

Robotic surgery

Today, these two words are not strange words for people, many have heard but also some of people have had robotic procedures. Slowly we have more and more surgeons in different specialities who are able to operate using this technology. In our Trust following specialities are operating using Robotic technique:

  • colorectal: bowel surgery
  • urology
  • gynecology

That is why the equipment is in use all 5 days a week. We have a large number of surgeries and now Trust is submitting a proposal for a second Robotic equipment in order to be able to operate more people in this way.

What are the benefits:

  • for surgeons 3d vision
  • surgeon can perform precise movement using fingers and joints of equipment instead of stiff long instruments in laparoscopic approach.
  • after surgery patient's stay is significantly reduced between 3-4 days which was before 5-10 days
  • less pain issues and good recovery

At present the operation time is about 5 hours and sometimes more, but you know yourself the more often we use this technique the better will be the skills of surgeons.

In order to have an idea how it goes, I wanted to invite you to this video that was done within out surgical colorectal procedure that you find on this website.

Many of young surgical trainees hope to get some basic skills now while they are in training, the early they start the better they will be.

Thank you Sunita for supporting my post and for Steemcurator08 :)

You know, I don’t trust human doctors, and, moreover, I won’t trust a robot doctor, who can turn out to be a suspended tin can at the most inopportune moment :)

I can imagine that was my feeling when I heard robotic surgery, the whole point is it is a software that helps to move the instruments, but movements are done by the fingers of surgeon who is performing the fine job, so still human being behind :)

My son says he doesn't know what he would have done without the "extra help" as he calls it. (•ิ‿•ิ)

PS: My husband just wrote an application for Day Webster

I can just join your son, nowadays we can not imagine our surgeries using new modern equipments, that improves the health of patient in the first instance and that is the main aim of all the development.

Wow, it is great, your husband's creation helps many to assess the time time and shifts for many who is using Day Webster :)
