A look back at the future

in #thoughts5 years ago

A couple of years ago I wrote a series called, Angels and Humans, and in a discussion the other day with a client the first episode of it came to mind, which is posted below. We were talking about training techniques originally, but it led on to how the differences in background and understanding affects how a person is going to be evaluate and act or, not act.

Learning is an exercise, no one can do it for you.

It doesn't matter how good or bad teacher is, it is up to the student whether they take something away with them or not. This is generally not the way we look at it though as it is much more convenient to believe that it is the teacher that is to blame for an inability to learn - this is a lack of responsibility.

While not a very good student at school and never a great believer in institutional learning, I always found it interesting that children thought that not learning was a win. Sure, it is likely that a great deal of school is useless, but unless careful to learn in other domains, once there is a habit or attitude that learning is useless, it can be a very difficult process to break.

Our environment shapes us by influencing our thoughts, turning them into conversations and developing actions that change the environment and create our world - and the cycle continues. We are all brainwashed, the difference is what we are brainwashed by. I think that these days we are delving deeper into passive entertainment, passive consumption, materialism and the treating of people as disposable. What we are doing is making ourselves irrelevant and the more we do it, the stronger the habit becomes.

What comes of our habits and traditions, what comes of when we treat each other as disposable resources, what happens when we are not paying attention to the consequences of our actions?

Anyway, you can have a read of the series as it is linked throughout the post below if you choose.

Angels and Humans | Ep01 | Misstep

She looked into his eyes.

"Think of your parents. Think of your friends. Think of that pretty girl you talked to last week. Imagine yourself a year from now at university studying to become an engineer, doing what you enjoy. Think of where it could lead you. You could travel, see the world. There is so much beauty you are yet to experience. Unimaginable beauty is on offer and the life you now know is a mere shadow of what could be."

"You are still young, there is so much you are yet to learn about the world. You feel that you know what is right, what is just, what is true, but you are yet to see if it is. You are yet to truly question and test if what you know is real or false. Belief is not enough, you must dive into life and experiment, challenge yourself, throw your ideas into the mix and listen to what arises. Discuss with people you are yet to know."

"The conversations that await you will give you views that you are yet to consider, change you fundamentally and you will understand where you have stepped and realise you must take a step back. These people are there waiting already, they are not hypothetical, they are not promises, they are not illusions cast before you. They are there, I know it."

"And amongst them is one who you will connect with most deeply, one who will take all that you have ever known and turn it upside down. Yet you will know you are finally for the first time, the right way up. She will make you think back to this moment time and time again in a thousand different ways and you will understand that once upon a time, you understood nothing and be grateful you awoke. That what you thought was truth, divinity, love was nothing but a puff of smoke that you were manipulated into following."

"You just need to take a step back, let go and choose another path."

She looked into his eyes. She waited.

The tears, the confusion, the lack of understanding at what he had just heard. Time had stood still while she spoke but he had not realised. He had been consumed as he absorbed his words. Sweat and uncertainty dripped from him in the heat, his hair matted against his forehead.

He closed his eyes, his breathing ragged, drawn tight against his chest. His mind wild with fear, could not grasp onto the words that had passed, he could feel them but they were slipping away. The image he had built of a world of possibility as she spoke, of flowers and gardens and the honied eyes of an unknown love were fading into the distance. He was losing grip on the other path.

She looked into his eyes. She knew. She had lost him.

His eyes opened and life began to move again, the crying, the begging, the screams of mercy. He looked at their faces as they looked at his, terror in their eyes, pleading silently for him to stop this madness, to leave them in peace. A man dressed for work, a mother holding her baby tightly, an elderly women rocking back and forth staring. All with tears, all wanting another chance, another day, another moment to spend with their families, to do what they love.

This was his reality. He stepped forward and pressed the button.

Yep... Quite obvious even. We lost those core 'right' values at least 3 decades ago

And we are seeing the results of the shift now, and we have only gotten worse. Going forward, it is going to get much worse before it gets better.

Will it ever get better? The tools that encourage isolationism are embedded in materialism and at the same serves as tools for brainwashing us too. How can it get better when organic connection has been abandoned for fiber optic cables, 5g networks and so on?
I think that we have to begin networking organically again for there to be a return to the community that we used to have in the early days. The human race has become immune to pain, to death, to the horrors of war, of hate and everyone is saying, he is not mine, she us not of my people, so it is not my business. Some do not even want to see another person breathe the same air.

Is there hope for us? I am pessimistic by nature but I always keep hope alive by looking at those who still try to be angels, to do it right not for TV ratings, not for reviews, for endorsements, or awards but because it is right.

I too want to make that kind of connection that would toss my world upside down and make me question all that I know of the world but I'm a child of my society, I rarely step out of my room or talk to my neighbors. So... Tomorrow will tell what we have made of ourselves.

I have a feeling that social disconnection will eventually lead to a very strong pullback as automation and AI take the place of the tasks that we have come to define ourselves by, the ones that make us money. It'll get worse, before it gets better though, and I do not think that I will see that better, even as I work toward it.
