Let's Watch! BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: S01E01 "33"

So the story has begun. We open to find that the Cylons find where the battlestar is every 33 minutes, which is a pretty cool concept. This is the first time I truly, truly felt bad for the crew whenever they showed how sleep deprived they were. Which is really silly if you ask me considering the show starts off with genocide. Maybe I'm just an awful person deep down at heart?
I thought the episode was a little boring for the first 20 or so minutes until they said that that one ship was missing. Please don't hurt me! I did take some time to figure out what the general public think of this episode and apparently it's one of the best made of the show, but this is just coming from a first time viewer. Be nice!
One of my favorite parts of the episode was when Starbuck refused to take her pills and then told Apollo HOW to get a crew member to agree with his wishes (by smacking her on the mouth) and they both just started laughing. It was a light moment in an all around dark, dark episode (I LOVE DARK T.V.).
So I've decided that Boomer does not know she is Cylon. When Starbuck says "it's because she's a Cylon" i thought we would get some reaction from her face. So she's a sleeper. I've decided. There. That's all. Show's over. We can all go home now.
Now to the part that is truly awesome. When they shoot a civilian ship. I really, really wished they showed people inside of it, but that is just my sick twisted mind there (and I also read they original planned for that and if you look closely there is some movement on the ship).
The ending was hopeful and it was eh. No, just kidding I really enjoyed it. The President's acting is amazing. I also understand why they would chose to end such an extreme episode on a light moment of happiness.
The stuff with Helo on Caprica seemed a little out of place, but I guess they had to get that story line going somewhere and I am excited to see where that goes with Boomer and everything.
Overall, really enjoyable. Definitely felt like a re-introduction into the world of Galactica more than a continuation of the Mini Series, so I am excited for the ball to get rolling!
8.5/10.

Great episode!. Am i the only one who thinks the special effects in space are better than big screen productions?
When I first watched this episode, I thought it was absolutely amazing! I was hoping this would be the kind of story writing we could expect from the fledgling series. The tension was high right out of the gate and it kept up through out the entire episode. By the end of the episode, I was literally exhausted myself!
I am old enough to remember the original Battlestar Galactica. It was milk-an-cookies Sci-fi, but at my age it was still incredible (Lorne Green, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict! YES!).
Ron Moore's take on the re-imagining was incredible. I always enjoyed his episodes of ST:TNG because they always included conflict in that highly-sanitized world. Giving him greater latitude in DS9 was a great decision since that series required more "grit" and conflict.
Sadly for this series, Ron's flaws as a writer/producer surfaced. Poor Ron never grasped the concept of "pacing" and all of his storylines were crushed under the weight of his exacting layers of detail (Can you imagine Game of Thrones with RM at the helm? 7 seasons in and Ned Start would still on the King's Road heading toward King's Landing!!! ;) )
Still, when I think back to Battlestar, the first season was the best and this was one of the two best episodes of the season (the other being AoC/You Can't Go Home Again, that whole Adama/Kara thread still makes me sob like a school-girl)
Thanks for the post. Looking forward to reading more!
