RE: Let's Watch! BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: S01E01 "33"
When I first watched this episode, I thought it was absolutely amazing! I was hoping this would be the kind of story writing we could expect from the fledgling series. The tension was high right out of the gate and it kept up through out the entire episode. By the end of the episode, I was literally exhausted myself!
I am old enough to remember the original Battlestar Galactica. It was milk-an-cookies Sci-fi, but at my age it was still incredible (Lorne Green, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict! YES!).
Ron Moore's take on the re-imagining was incredible. I always enjoyed his episodes of ST:TNG because they always included conflict in that highly-sanitized world. Giving him greater latitude in DS9 was a great decision since that series required more "grit" and conflict.
Sadly for this series, Ron's flaws as a writer/producer surfaced. Poor Ron never grasped the concept of "pacing" and all of his storylines were crushed under the weight of his exacting layers of detail (Can you imagine Game of Thrones with RM at the helm? 7 seasons in and Ned Start would still on the King's Road heading toward King's Landing!!! ;) )
Still, when I think back to Battlestar, the first season was the best and this was one of the two best episodes of the season (the other being AoC/You Can't Go Home Again, that whole Adama/Kara thread still makes me sob like a school-girl)
Thanks for the post. Looking forward to reading more!
