How the Food Industry shifts Focus from Health to Sales

in #health7 years ago

In today's world of mass media advertisements and gluttonous amounts of propaganda, it is no wonder the average consumer has little idea as to what they are buying. We live in an era dominated buy big business and the food industry is one of the biggest. For the most part, people pay little attention to what they are actually eating and prefer to follow their taste buds. The food industry tends to just prod us along with their concentration of disinformation leading the savvy consumer away for health and onto purchases. In the advertisement above we see how Hershey's uses marketing to lead a consumer to believe that maybe this wonderful tasting product is good for them.?. The primary ingredient in Hershey's syrup is high-fructose corn syrup followed up by corn syrup, but look at the bright side there is virtually no fat.

So one might say to themselves that this kind of ad doesn't work on me. If you have seen through this marketing then good for you. The problem is that we are repeatedly bombarded by these advertisements and we are not able to sort through all the disinformation. What happens instead is an autonomic response signaled by the subconscious when key words are put into play. We simply read things like "fat-free" and we think to ourselves, "Oh this must be good for me". Even worse we try the said product and think "this is delicious, I should buy this again", and then it becomes habit. So with very little effort or input from our own consciousness, we formulate an opinion on a product and the rest is just spare pounds.

This is a known deliberate industry interference into our minds ability to make a decision and we are virtually oblivious to it 90% of the time. Their goal is not to necessarily lie but to simply undermine the whole truth. We have seen countless times in history where the big tobacco industries used the same methods. A perfect example of this dates back to 1967 and the US Fairness Doctrine. In this historic case the courts ruled that big tobacco must provide 1 health ad about to tobacco for every 4 tobacco advertisements condoning smoking. Instead of complying to this ruling, the tobacco industry decided to just remove their ads from television all together. They understood that if the average person knew the truth then the tobacco industry would suffer. Our food industry works in similar fashions.

So how do we know what is good and what is bad. To put it in the most simple form I can think of, eat a whole food plant based diet. If a product has an ingredient list with more than 4-5 ingredients don't buy it. If a food contains any processed or refined ingredients, don't buy it. When I was changing from a standard western diet to a P.B.W.F. diet, I was appalled by what I had been eating. Worse than that I was a medical professional and had given nutritional education to countless Type II diabetics and people suffering from heart disease. All of the information I had been taught, and in return taught my patients, was false! Anger was a very normal response and I felt plenty of it.

My goals now simply are to try to inform as many people as possible to the dangers of ALL big industry and hopefully have some small influence into a person finding a better way of living. Food is not diet; Food is a lifestyle. In order to deal with the food related illnesses and issues we must understand the food is equally physical and psychological. We must seek balance in all walks of life.

Nice post, upvoted. I could not agree with you more. Trans/hydrogenated fats are a real evil when introduced into foods - a common ingredient in fast food, pizza, cookies, margarine, etc. Some governments - believe it or not the US, as well as many European countries, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, Ireland - have woken up to the fact that transfats are just not good for you. They have introduced bans and limitations on transfat in foods. The US FDA ruled this in 2015 and it comes into effect in 2018.

Thanks for the great reply! Yes I was aware of the ban on transfats and the shift away from them. I believe this to be a step in the right direction but the western diet is still full of foods that can be traced to all of the top 15 biggest killers in the US including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and carcinomas of all sort and that is just to name a few. I really feel that people must advocate for themselves and be aware that the food industry is not looking out for our betterment.
