Scraping my junk for precious metals #2 - Disemboweling a printer - scanner combo
So, two days ago I made a quick poll asking what my next scraping project should be. I really hoped you guys and gals would choose my dog but almost unanimously you chose something safe and boring:
I live to serve, so printer - scanner it is:
Ok, let's get my tools ready. This sucker is going down:
After a quick look on the machine, I discovered that HP is using a proprietary type of screw, meaning my screwdriver was useless. Fuckers... This left me with only one option. Go full caveman. Forget the screwdriver. My hammer and my two hands are the only thing I need to open this fucker up.
First, I started with the up side of the machine, to remove the glass. The last thing I wanted was breaking it while hammering the machine. Notice how the screws are still in place. That's because I simply used my hands to carefully rip the plastic:
Then I turned the machine upside down and started hammering and pulling the plastic parts like a mad man.. I am sure my neighbour thought I forgot to take my meds or something:
And some more hammering...
And after about 10 minutes of hammering and pulling pieces of plastic, I had a nice pile of plastic trash:
And a small pile of various metals and electronic scrap:
As you can see in the photo, printers apparently don't hold anything of much value. There is some aluminium, some seel, some cords, some gold plated surfaces where the cartridges lock in, some gold plated pins, some copper bearing motors and that's it. And all these don't weight much, I'd say all in all they are worth 2 maybe 3 euros as scrap at best...
However, as you can see I was lucky and I scored two ink cartridges from inside the printer! Depending on your country, you might be able to sell those, each for about 1-2 bucks! After some googling, I found a shop in my town that takes them for 1.5 euros each! So that's an easy 3 euros.
Oh yeah, there is this nice piece of glass too. I will give it to @ruth-girl, she will probably use it for one of her DIY projects.
TIL: Hammers are good...Sledge Hammers are better!
This is the second time I scrape something and if there is one thing I learned today, is that I need to buy a sledgehammer. It took me more than 5 minutes of hammering to break all plastics apart with my regular hammer, but if I had a sledge hammer (or something equally manly), 2-3 swoopings would have probably done the trick. And it will probably come really handy and save me tons of time in the future. So yeah.. I am getting one. Plus, it's gonna be super fun!
So, was it worth it?
Yeah, I would say scraping a printer scanner thing is worth your time. Just don't bother with the screws. Hammer your way in like a champ and you will be finished in no time. And if you don't have time for that, just take the ink cartidges which are probably the easiest and most expensive loot from these machines.
Ok, see you in my next post when I will be scraping Hera for precious metals! Just look how thrilled she is:
Did you enjoy this post? Then don't miss my one man's trash.. is my treasure series:

BEERfor you. Enjoy it!Do you sell the parts for money?
Initially I planned to do so yes, but I have changed my mind. I plan to keep them and melt them into nice bars. Also I'll try to chemically extract the gold in the future, from the gold plated pins and teeth. Some things though, like in this case the ink cartridges for which I have no use, yeah I'll sell them:)
But it's still a new hobby I started so might change my mind again :p I'll just go with the flow and have fun, I am not doing this for the money, at least not for now
You can melt aluminium (melting point of around 600 degrees) in your backyard with bbq coals but everything else is gonna need a good furnace, tongs, protective wear, melting pot and fuel.
You can't reach temperature of 800+ celsius without that dedicated equipment and that can be costly.
I know it's costly, but I have a friend who owns furnaces and everything :D
I was thinking of buying some gold ingot and silver ingots just to have something to hold and play around with every now and then heh
You got my brand knew super awesome leo vote!
I guess that the screws are torx or stupid star that no one uses..
You should think to add a video next time!
yeah it was some star-shaped shit ! I am too lazy to make a video, but I will try XD
Can you explain which part of your hammer can't deal with screws?!?!
Pathetic!
:D

my hammer had no problem with the screws. It's my screwdriver that didn't fit the screws, so I used my hammer 100% for this project :)

Time to buy a 5 pound sledge and go beat up those other scrap parts you have laying around.
No, you won't! I will call the police first!
there's a typo in your quote... weird!
