'Poisonous' Moscow Mule cups are under fire — here's how much you'd have to drink to be at risk

in #health7 years ago

Moscow Mules' unique cups probably aren't poisoning you — but that doesn't mean drinkers can sleep easy just yet.

Iowa's Alcoholic Beverages Division recently issued an advisory bulletin warning against serving beverages in copper mugs. The reasoning: Iowa follows the Food and Drug Administration's code that prohibits copper from coming into direct contact with acidic foods with a pH below 6.0, including Moscow Mules.

I read another article attacking Moscow mules and immediate thought it was bullshit and this article does a good job confirming that.

Here's the problem with this government logic. Most people don't get enough copper in their diet anyways so a little more copper from these mugs is probably not that bad. The ph levels need to be like stomach acid levels of 1 or 2 ph to dissolve a lot of copper into the drink and acid doesn't really work very good at dissolving things when there's a bunch of ice in it. So even having a Moscow mule at like 3 or 4 ph with ice in it isn't going to dissolve that much copper.

Copper poisoning, similarly to lead or other metal poisoning, occurs after a period of exposure. According to food poisoning attorney Bill Marler, it would take years to ingest a dangerous amount of copper by drink drinking Moscow Mules alone.

"You'd have to drink from a copper cup every meal of every day for 25 years," Marler told Business Insider.

Basically what he's saying is you'd have to drink your Moscow Mule then shove the entire copper cup down your throat then you'd get copper poisoning and before you'd get the cup halfway down your throat you'd be dead of asphyxiation.

This just another example of government overreach were something sounds good and sounds like they care about your health and safety but in reality it's not true and just take more freedoms away from people.

There are real environmental dangers that we put ourselves in contact with.....Like Roundup Weed killer.

It is a shame that much less dangerous ( can we even say, innocuous) are hyped up, dividing and conquering our attention spans!!
A real shame!!

Never had a Mosccow Mule....but I may try one now!!
Peace!

Exactly, get the lead and arsenic out of our food and water that is actually causing health problems in people now.

I've had Moscow mules a few times they are pretty good.

....and flouride too. Chlorine can be off gassed if you can fill a pitcher and let it air overnight...
But flouride is bad stuff. Even if it is good for teeth...our whole bodies don't need to suffer through it!

We have a Berkey filtration system with flouride filter. Hopefully that is protecting the kids!!

I have a Propur and love it. Cured my IBS in about a month so I know it works.

Thank you for this revealing article. I bought one of these cups for Christmas and I'm glad to know it is safe to use.

I wondered about those cups.
