Is AI really that dangerous?
Rise of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence or AI is a series of deep learning algorithms that are created in order to perform a particular task. The goal of AI is to solve problems that humans cannot, or particular ones that would take us years to work out. The way the world is going, artificial intelligence is almost being developed in everything from healthcare, retail to defence. AI expert Kai Fu Lee said that 40% of jobs will be replaced by robots within a 15-25 year time frame. Although, jobs that don't exist today will also be created. We're living in times where there is going to be rapid technological change due to AI in the short term future. The singularity event is a common term that is utilised. This will be when the last invention a man makes has been created.
How dangerous could AI be?
There have been quite a few warnings from people such as Elon Musk and Sam Harris that artificial intelligence needs regulating as it may not be fully beneficial to humanity.
Obviously, the most dangerous part about AI is that big massive autonomous weapons that have been developed fall into the wrong hands and blow humanity up in a few seconds. Great! Enjoying your favourite McDonalds happy meal one second and then bam, you've been killed by someone's pet AI that was stolen. People are very scared of governments developing autonomous weapons, as humans could lose control of the situation very easily. The consensus is that wars may not be fought via robots but by vicious attacks on infrastructure that the civilised world depends on. An example being, an AI that launches a cyber attack on a country's' national grid. Think about the mass chaos that would cause as we rely on it so heavily.
Another danger, and the one I find a bit more uneasy, is an AI that's friends with you one minute, but develops their own agenda and start going off the rails. We probably won't know about this till something massive happens. They'll be so smart and out think our every move as they continuously get better. What happens if artificial intelligence sees us as we see Ants? By giving artificial intelligence the power over major infrastructure projects, there is always that unknown risk of it's intelligence getting so powerful, humans will become irrelevant to their plans. Killer robots that could create themselves with max production efficiency, all communicating with other AI's like seen in the movies, could become a potential reality.
This only touches briefly on the dangers of artificial intelligence. And of course, the reason it's being developed is so it can benefit society, such as studying cures for diseases. But without the correct regulation and processes created behind the rise of AI, humans could seriously lose control after the singularity event has occurred.
Very interesting post.
if there are regulations for AI it will not be harmful but if we train AI to do military stuff ( like Skynet from Terminator ) then there is a problem.
AI can do a lot of good to humanity but can destroy it too.
Take as an example a dog and his owner.
if you train your dog to attack everyone that enter your backyard the dog will do it no matter if the intruder is a thief or a child that want to catch his ball. you can't put the blame on the dog
Interesting
