La Scarzuola, is a small masterpiece of architecture protected by of one of the wildest areas of Umbria. In the province of Terni, it is a semi-unknown place that deserves, greater enhancement at the tourist level. Or maybe not. Because part of its charm is also in its being still little known and frequented by mass tourism.
La Scarzuola will let itself be found and admired only by travelers who will have the patience to look for it, among thick woods and pristine hillsTo reach it you will have to travel along stretches of dirt road that separate the city from the rest of the world, bearing the holes and stones that sprout out of the road like obstacles to protect the one that has all the appearance of a sacred, almost mystical place.
In 1956, the architect, artist and designer Tomaso Buzzi (1900-1981) bought the land and the Franciscan convent with a precise plan in mind. In the silence of the Umbrian woods, Buzzi decided to build his ideal city in secret.
The result is a hermetic garden that was to be a sort of "autobiography in stone" for Buzzi, a legacy to posterity purposely unfinished where the most free, intimate and primordial Tomaso Buzzi must have transpired.
The visit to the Buzzian city is a real neo-enlightenment initiation path, studded with complex and disorientating esoteric and Masonic symbols that have the explicit purpose of upsetting the consciences of visitors.
Buzzi explains in his notes that Scarzuola must be read and understood only by rare, elective spirits, which are congenial to it. For this reason the architect has never provided a univocal explanation of the work, which is open and unfinished by choice.
