And the sky’s the limit
Without being a superhero of comic books or cinema, even for ordinary people there are life-long adventures.
The oldest adventure I remember is to be a Trekker: literally I don't remember a moment in life when I wasn't passionate about the TV series and, consequently, about space, technology and exploration.
An adventure, connected to this passion, that I lived for many years was to collaborate with a beautiful group of fans in a project called HyperTrek (and that, in its long history, has been called in many other ways).
Last year Luigi wrote a post about HyperTrek that at first glance might seem harmless, but that planted a pole in the heart of many of us with the phrase
HyperTrek is unlikely to be regularly updated in the near future.
For me - and perhaps for others too - this is sounded like a real wake-up call: the signal that the time had come to take the project by the hand and not let it die.
Although the latest incarnation of HT - HyperTrek NG - was a sophisticated and well organized system, its management had become impractical. Changes reported in mailing lists by a large group of people eventually fell back on a single person. Changes all then to be managed by hand individually in the HT author system.
The lack of a TV series in the last decade and the uncertain fate of the latest film incarnations have also facilitated a certain disaffection with Star Trek in general.
These are all reasons that have led to the slow abandonment of HT: so this was the definitive resource on Star Trek in Italian remains a monument to a great work done in the past.
A monument that remained still a few years ago, unfortunately.
Luigi's message and the approaching of the new Star Trek Discovery series prompted me to at least make an attempt to revive this project.
Respolating an idea proposed several times and never gone to port for various reasons, I thought of starting a project to convert HT to a wiki. A site similar to the famous Wikipedia, based on its own open-source software, MediaWiki.
This project started about a year ago and has been producing interesting results for some time. Given the departure of Star Trek Discovery, we decided to reveal this new project called WikiTrek to the public.
The reason for this project is to make an attempt to create a more collaborative platform in which people take charge of analyzing Star Trek's artistic production, reporting interesting information on the Wiki and handling every report from start to finish.
I repeat, it's an attempt: WikiTrek is no better or worse than HyperTrek in absolute terms.
It is an experiment.
WikiTrek will have both content imported from HyperTrek and original content that the community - hopefully extensive - will want to bring.
Therefore, everything that exists in HyperTrek one day not far away will be automatically transported to WikiTrek, while all new information (one on all DSC episodes tabs) will have to be created by hand.
What can you do for your Wiki, are you asking?
Basically two things: contribute to the automatic conversion project from HyperTrek and contribute with original content to WikiTrek directly.
Refer to the How to Collaborate page for details on these two activities.
Keep in mind that WikiTrek is all a work-in-progress and that, not only is there a lot of work to do, but there is also a lot of work to organize!
Thanking everyone here would be unrealistic: let us put the matter back to a specific date and page.
For the time being, I invite all Trekkers to rush to WikiTrek and contribute.
