WAR AGAINST OBESITY (Issue 1)

Obesity exposes the human body to health problems and makes it a fertile ground for numerous killer diseases and conditions such as diabetes, stroke hypertension, high blood cholesterol, bone diseases, liver diseases, sleep disorders, menstrual problems, infertility and asthma. As explained by Dr Beckie Tagbo, obesity places on the body an extra weight which creates unusual stress on all parts of the body, increasing the risk of dying. Without any respect for age, gender and without any discrimination for against race or tribe, obesity could fearlessly pitch its ugly tent in children, adolescents and adults alike.
Therefore, no age-grade is excused from the WAR AGAINST OBESITY AND OVERWEGHT. Everybody has to fight this war in order to live a little longer on the planet earth. Spare no expense and energy to confront and attack the forces and facet of obesity. Block all its routes and bush paths. Give it no passage-way under nagging rainfall and scorching sunshine. Obesity is like a nasty earthworm which subtly digs the graves of its victims. It does its havoc quietly as if from a ambush like the famishing lions of the Sahel Savannah. Under the cover of a celebrated diet and attractive appearance, the victims of obesity without much ado ignorantly receive their death-sentence. What a pitiable condition for an unsuspecting humanity.
OBESITY EXPLAINED TO A LAYMAN
Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories (of energy) from food than he/she burns or uses. Our bodies need energy to sustain life and be physically active, but to maintain weight, we need to balance the energy we eat and the energy we use. When a person eats more calories of energy than he/she uses, the energy balance is tipped towards weight gain and obesity in the long run.
CAUSES OF OBESITY
According to Dr B. Tagbo the causes of Obesity include the following:
- Lack of sufficient exercise can result in obesity.
- Eating too much of fast foods, fatty foods, surgary foods and drinks, paves way for obesity.
- Taking in too much food than a person’s body can effectively burn invites overweight.
- Decreased level of daily physical activity results in weight gain and obesity. Refusal to participate in energy-consuming chores is not an advantage.
- Driving long distances to schools, offices and work-places disallows people to walk and be exercised effectively, the regrettable outcome is obesity.
- Medical experts observe that as people get older, their bodies ability to process food decreases, leading them to require less quantities of food. Hence any tendency to overeat in later years of adulthood brings one to the thresholds of obesity.
- Some illnesses like hypothyroidism can cause obesity.
- Drugs like steroids are known to trigger off obesity and overweight.
