Alternative to Facebook ?

Hi you all, I'm new to Steemit. I read very briefly about it and joined today to see if Steemit could be an alternative to Failbook. I don't know yet how it works, but will have a closer look in the follwing days. If you can help me along in the meanwhile, you'd be very much appreciated !
