Bryophyllum daigremontianum - One of the Coolest Ways I've Ever Witnessed a Plant Reproducing

in #amazing7 years ago

This is a very cool plant and I'm glad that I've come across it once again.

Originally, I first met this plant while living in New Orleans back in 2004. It was one of the species that I brought back with me when I moved out in 2005, just months prior to Hurricane Katrina. At the time I never knew who it was, and eventually I no longer had one that I kept. Rather recently, @mama-pepper had taken some of our girls to a "ladies dinner" at a local church, where they brought a few of these home.

These plants can grow taller than I am and eventually they grow some flowers too, but the most incredible thing is the way that they reproduce by forming tiny new plants on their leaves. Also known as the "Mother of Thousands" plant, to watch all of the tiny new plants drop to the ground, fully formed with leaves and roots already is an incredible sight to behold. I think this plant is originally from Madagascar and is toxic, but it is still a remarkable plant with some incredible capabilities. Check out these photos below of new plants forming on the leaves of the "parent plant."

Man those mothers can spread like wildfire....
Just be aware you might have quite a few of these on your hands in a few years if you plant one...
But thats a very cool plant...Thanks for sharing!

We will be keeping them in pots to prevent them taking over! Thanks @friendly-fenix!

These where like spreading inside my friends apartment jumping from flower pot to flower pot... =)

I doubt if they'll survive your winters, so probably not much to worry about.

I did have some escape their pots in Florida, and as you say they were near my height, and the flowers were gorgeous. But they have shallow roots, and are easily pulled out of the soil, so easy to control.

I love these things!

I still had a couple when I left Florida, but I haven't seen it in a while, so it may not have survived the long winter inside. And we have had a few surprise freezes over the years, which may have done them in if I didn't bring them inside.
