The implication here that the Republican Right has a monopoly on weak moments of admiration and respect for authoritarian regimes omits a like weakness in the Democrat Left.

I am old enough to remember well the popularity of Huey Long who attacked Roosevelt for not going near far enough to help the poor by taking from the rich.

But it withered quickly after Long was assassinated soon after he announced that he would run against FDR who had the FBI investigate him!
