Uncertainty - a force for good if you harness it...

Uncertainty. That dreaded word disliked by all. Uncertainty is actually the driver of enterprise and exploration. We could have said, let’s not go to the moon, it’s the outcome is too uncertain; we don’t want to test new medical research, the outcome is too uncertain; we don’t want to explore the seas as we are most likely to fall off the edge, we are too uncertain as to what might happen.

So let’s plug certainty into everything. Certainty in the markets for example; great! But who will make money? Uncertainty creates opportunity, uncertainty creates boundary testing, uncertainty brings out the best (and worst) in people – isn’t that good? Isn’t that how we advance? I for one do not want to sit inside my warm cave being too uncertain to venture out.

I do not understand how the ‘over sell’ of fear and uncertainty is allowed to be used without the balancing effect of the proven ability of the human mind to create advantage and opportunity out of uncertainty. The world is absolutely full of innovative, adaptive, capable, intuitive minds and isn’t that the certainty to rely on?

So next time people raise the mantra of uncertainty, question the motive behind it. Question the beneficiary of it. Question the validity of it. Then ignore it and have a go – unless you are uncertain that is! D
