Shadows Of Ourselves
"Recently I was asked if there's any hope for the future. The future of our county, the future of the world, the future of the next generation. I responded that there is only hope with action. No one changed the world by sitting on their couch and wishing that someone would do something. Be that someone. Stop hoping for action and be action"
-Claire Freedman
This quote underscores the double edged nature of hope. In the story of Pandora's Box, hope was at the bottom of all the other evils in the box. For if one has no hope, life is void of meaning or purpose. Yet, is this such a bad thing?
To quote Nietzsche,
'hope is the worst of evils, for it prolongs the torment of men'
No matter how much rational thought we put into a search for a 'good life' or finding reality or truth, we are bound to fail. There is no organizational structure to be found in a chaotic and irrational world.
It is only when we are able to understand that the shadows on the wall we perceive as reality, are not reality at all, that we are able to be free.
