Nilgiri Tahr - Nilgiritragus hylocrius: Which is also known locally as the Nilgiri ibex or ibex. It is an ungulate that is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Western Ghats in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in India. It is related to the sheep of the genus Ovis than the ibex and wild goats of the genus Capra.

Tamil people calls the Nilgiri Tahr as varaiaadu which is derived from Tamil ancient words wurrai meaning (precipice) & aadu meaning (goat). Its closest relatives are sheep. It was placed with the Himalayan tahr and the Arabian tahr (Arabitragus jayakari) in the genus Hemitragus. It has recently been transferred to a new genus Nilgiritragus because it is genetically more similar to members of the genus Ovis than to other tahrs.

The Nilgiri Tahr is a stocky goat with fur and a bristly mane. Males are larger than females and darker in color. Both have curved horns with 40 centimetres for males & 30 centimetres for females. Weigh up to 80 to 100 kilograms (180 to 220 lb) for adults & 100 centimetres tall at the shoulder. We can compare male & female by their backs because Males develop a light grey area so is the reason they also called saddlebacks.
