Do animals have a sixth sense?

in #animals7 years ago (edited)

Many recognize the ability of animals to feel the impending natural disaster. The amazing deeds of many of our smaller brothers deserve close scrutiny.

The dog has traveled hundreds of kilometers to return home. The cat made a round trip in search of the owner. Horses and cows flee in fear before the earthquake begins. Camels panic on the eve of a sandstorm. All these stories testify to the extraordinary sensory abilities of animals. It remains, however, unclear whether they possess any abilities unknown to man. Animal behavior specialists deny having extrasensory perception; Sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste are based on them on the same principles as ours. How, then, can we explain the incomprehensible ability of many animals to orient themselves or to anticipate natural disasters? Millions of animals that inhabit our planet show a wide range of sensory possibilities. We hardly see at night, and the os eyes serve both at night and in the daytime. The rattlesnake successfully hunts in the dark, perceiving with its thermoreceptors the heat rays emitted by its victims.

Bioacoustics

The human ear perceives sound waves in the range of 20 to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). And elephants hear sounds below 20 Hz (infrasound); They are carried for hundreds of kilometers and allow these animals to communicate among themselves at great distances. And dogs and cats perceive ultrasounds (frequency above 20 kHz), which helps them very much when searching for prey.

Most animals have special sensitive hairs and vibrissae, perceiving the slightest touch and vibration. Feathers of birds act as vibrissae, transmitting information about the air currents to the brain, which allows you to instantly correct the flight. Some animals react to changes in atmospheric pressure, for example soms, which are very disturbing before a thunderstorm.

Internal Compass

Post pigeons and other migratory birds perceive the fluctuations of the Earth's magnetic field and, thanks to this, are perfectly oriented. Magnetoreception is used even by honey bees, when they build new honeycombs, placing them strictly parallel to the already existing ones. It is also proved that during seasonal vibrations the penguins are guided by the starry sky.

In general, one thing is clear: each species has its own sensory capabilities, adapted to its lifestyle, and receives from the environment the information that is necessary for it to exist in its environment.
