Bushman Paintings ~ Eland Affects Today Like Yesteryear

in #animalsunday7 years ago

Mighty Mountain Eland (Antelope)

Bushman Paintings most probably painted 130 to 500 years ago (may be even older), clearly indicate the presence of Eland. Described as a blend between a deer and an ox has been used by humans for many years for leather, meat and nutritious milk, domesticated in some areas. Following two photo's taken on a previous visit hiking to caves clearly shows the hunter hunting Eland off the land in the valley.

Most art is found painted on sandstone under waterproof overhangs, where the paint used will sink in and does not peel off, very few paintings are found in actual caves. There is no value one can put to cultural paintings representing an otherwise lost culture, many paintings found in weatherproof overhangs, well worthwhile the hike.

The Drakensberg is most probably the largest open-air art gallery in the world, what you need is a pair of good hiking boots and more often than not... a guide.

Do my eyes deceive me, one of the largest antelope in the world, it has been a long time since we last saw these big herbivores moving quietly through this area (at least 14 years).

Rising early to watch the sunrise slipping onto the mountain I noticed movement about one hundred meters away, a small herd of Eland grazing, came down during the night to graze on the golf course.

Eland herd
Eland half the herd moving off on higher ground during the day. As quietly as they had arrived they were leaving, after so many years of being hunted who would blame them, this is not a big herd of antelope we only saw 8.

Late afternoon we sighted them on the opposite hills, they must have crossed the river looking for fresh grazing, avoiding humans at all cost.

Two mornings we woke up to find contended grazing Eland, here are some prints in the mud, that was the last we saw of the Eland, back over into the next mountain ridge or up a valley, it is good to know some of the animals are still showing up high in the Drakensberg mountains.

Eland footprints
Substantial weight indicated in the mud print, males can weigh up to 800kg, yet are surprisingly agile able to jump 2 meters high clearing farm fences in their stride. - f/3.3 1/50 sec ISO-80 - Canon PowerShot SX730 HS

Eland toe markings

Hope you enjoyed the outing, Eland are found further down the mountain in farming district quite often, it was seeing them roaming the foothills of the mountain that made this exiting to see them in an area where many years ago Bushman paintings have been seen.

The afternoon climb up the opposite hill the Eland took - go over that hill down again and up the next ridge to hopefully see the rock art as shown in the first two photographs.

What a great score, Joan! To catch the view of them as they are taking their early morning graze-about.

I have always been fascinated by cave drawing, I have only ever seen them by the Indians here in the States. What an adventure to among where the herds once grazed on a daily basis.

Thank you for such a wonderful walk through with you on your post. Each and every one of your writings give me deeper thought on life and living.

Have a most wonderful day!

Appreciate your visit and kind words Denise, nature is my source of inspiration to move forward every day. Learning from ancestors of old always are interesting, always a lesson about life to be learned.

great post. it sometimes a bit hard to grasp your mind around how old are these wall paintings and what kind of information they really hold - purely amazing! ;)

Being nomadic I would imagine it was like a poster board for those who followed, letting them know good hunting area and food available.

Wonderful post @joanstewart. From Bush paintings to now. That they're still around is incredible. I wouldn't doubt that the one in the painting was that big. These guys are huge.

Knowing they are still in an area they have been of hundreds of years shows how resilient they are. Sadly big cats, elephant and other animals reflected in rock art no longer live in this area.

Appreciate your kind visit.

@joanstewart enjoyed.
I really like looking at the cave paintings. Many are kept hidden in America since some people like to deface them. your photos are amazing

How very sad it is that people cannot find respect for another culture, history is what makes each and every one of us who we are.

Sad to learn that you have never seen some of the original inhabitants art, if people are defacing them knowingly, perhaps it is better to keep them hidden, future generations may show the respect they deserve.

Right .. it is that small percentage of folks that do not value anything.

The cave paintings must have been so coo to see but al those great shots and having seen the Eland is an exoteric=Enge not to be forgotten I am sure thanks so much for sharing its us

Something exciting to remember, thank goodness we have cameras, sure as heck I will not make the trek back to the painting anytime soon.

It sounds like a long trek but well worth doing at least once I bet :)

Getting a bit long in the tooth and cranky to get up into the hills like that again... It was well worth it at the time 😊

YEs the same for me, I am more into sedate and flat walks these days LOL

Excellent photos, you really captured their size in these photos. Such beautiful animals. 👍👍

Big and shy hopefully they find a way of establishing themselves up here again.

this paintings are looks so precious my friend..
500 years ago is long time.

Good reminder of how life was and could possibly be again.

I loved the information Joan and the stone drawings I especially loved I am very interested in ainchient history and I old things GREAT THANX

How could we possibly forget people who lived in harmony on the land many years before we arrived, the proof is painted on the overhangs as a reminder.

I love history and the prof of life or excistence in the past
