Digital Object Identifier How to locate and search

in #apa6 years ago

In this tutorial, I will tell you what a DOI is and show you where to find a DOI on a database record, on a journal article, and how to search for a DOI using CrossRef. A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique string of letters, numbers, and symbols assigned to a published work, such as an electronic journal article (APA, 2013). The DOI provides a persistent link to the item's location on the Internet. At the bottom is an example of a DOI. A DOI is included in a journal article reference using the APA Style Guide in its 6th edition. The DOI is typically located on the database record for the document. The DOI is found here on this Academic Search Complete database record for a journal article. Or the DOI might be located on the first page of an electronic document near the copyright notice. Sometimes the DOI for a journal article is not located on the database record. And sometimes the DOI is not located on the first page of a journal article either. This is often the case for journal articles with earlier publication dates, such as the example shown here. When the DOI is not located on the database record or the first page of the electronic document, you can search for the DOI using CrossRef. So in the address bar, I will type www.CrossRef.org. Bring your cursor to the "For Researchers" menu and select "Free DOI Name Lookup" There are multiple ways of searching for a DOI. For this tutorial, I will search by "Article title search." Scroll down and type in the last name of the first author listed on the article. Then enter the article title. Because I wish to find the DOI for this exact article, I will uncheck the box that allows multiple search results. And select the search button. Notice that the article title and author name are the same as my search query. I will select the DOI. This is to verify that the DOI is linked to the exact journal article I searched. So this DOI serves as a persistent link to the journal article and can be used in my reference list. In this video tutorial, you learned what a DOI is, where to locate a DOI, and how to look up a DOI using the article title search on CrossRef. Now you can apply DOI search skills in completing your research and reference lists. And that concludes this tutorial. Thank you for tuning in. .
