Before you move into an apartment, there are a few things you should look at.

Safety
Make sure you have smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. Look for fire safety features in the hallways and other parts of the structure.
Are the bars on your apartment windows approved safety gates that don't require a key? Make sure that each room has an operable window that can be used to escape. Find out what the building's fire escape plan is and make sure you know where to go in case of a fire.

Windows and doors
Make certain that all of the locks and doorknobs are in good working order.
