The 9000 Year-old Human Fossil Found in the Great Cave of Mexico

Archaeologists who are exploring the world's largest water-flooded cave are shocked to find ancient human fossils estimated to be 9,000 years old. In addition, they also found bones belonging to animals that roam the earth in the last Ice Age

A group of divers recently connected two underwater caves in eastern Mexico to reveal what is touted as the largest flood cave in the world. The discovery is believed to help explain the ancient Maya civilization that inhabited Mexico

The research was conducted on the Yucatan Peninsula filled with Mayan monumental relics. The ancient tribesmen were known to utilize a vast network of holes of land connected to the underground waters commonly called 'Cenotes'

The research team claimed to have managed to find 248 cenotes in a cave network along the 347 kilometers (km) known as 'Sac Actun', near the coast of Tulum. Of the 200 archaeological sites found, approximately 140 of whom are relics of the Maya. Some cenotes became the Mayan religious sites whose descendants inhabited the area

In addition to the discovery of ancient human fossils, the archaeologists also discovered giant limb bones, ancient elephants, and extinct bears from the Pleistocene period. Mexico's Ministry of Culture claims the discovery of the cave has rocked the archaeological world

"I think it's great. Without a doubt this is the most important underwater archaeological site in the world, "said the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) researchers

According to INAH, the water level rises approximately 100 meters (m) at the end of the Ice Age to flood the Maya cave's network system. That event led to an ideal condition for preserving the remnants of large extinct fauna from the Pleistocene period

For information, the Pleistocene geological period or the late Ice Age, started approximately 2.6 million years ago and ended approximately 11,700 years ago
