Arkansas High School Football

The Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) is the primary sanctioning body for top school sports in the state of Arkansas. AAA may be a member association of the National Federation of State highschool Associations (NFSHSA). Every public lyceum in Arkansas may be a de jure member of the AAA, and most private schools, but a couple of schools within the delta that belong to the Mississippi Private Schools Association, are included in the membership.

The Arkansas Activities Association or “AAA” founded seven high schools and colleges in 1904 and was called the “Arkansas State Athletic Association.” In 1912, high schools separated from colleges and became the “Arkansas Athletics Association.” The membership grew rapidly and eventually the name of the organization was changed to the “Arkansas Activities Association”.

The following member organizations exist within the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA):

Athletic Directors: – Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association (AHSAAA)
Athletic Directors: – Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association (AHSAAA)
Officials: – Arkansas Officials Association (AOA)

Arkansas Activities Association History

Prior to the unification of public schools, the AAA conducted only white school activities. Until 1961, an integrated school, even an integrated school within a band, required special permission from the association before it could compete with a white school. The primary AAA-approved meeting between a predominantly white school and a black school took place on October 28, 1966, between Little Rock Central High School and Little Mann. Some integrated schools were enrolled in AAA by 1966, and each of the African-American schools was enrolled in AAA in 1967 but retained separate districts. This resulted in a situation during which all-black Stuttgart Holman was to play partially integrated Pine Bluff Southeast, which had been admitted to the AAA in 1966, for the African-American championship. The AAA refused to permit the title game to require a place, on the grounds that Holman wasn’t a member of the association. In 1968 the districts were realigned to incorporate black and white schools within the same districts.
