Spiritual understanding: Arrogance produces only quarreling, but those who take advice gain wisdom. Proverbs 13:10
The sapiential books in the Bible with it's science to live, like the Book of Proverbs, place the arrogant man and the humble man on opposite and separate paths. These two kinds of men cannot live together unless they are forced to do so. The arrogant man, due to his hard heart, has difficulty listening. In arrogant men, the ego becomes a difficult burden to bear, and that's something everyone close to them notices immediately, but this does not happen to those who are humble in front of others. And in this sense, humility has an advantage, being humble means knowing how to listen to others, and thus take the best advice when the situation requires it.
This is why King Solomon, in his Book of Proverbs, left an interesting proverb on the subject to meditate: "Arrogance produces only quarreling, but those who take advice gain wisdom" Proverbs 13:10. And this is a spiritual truth that can be verified by studying the history of the kings of Israel and Judah in the Old Testament.
Rehoboam, the son of King Solomon, through his arrogance and pride, provoked the contempt of many in the assembly of Shechem, and only left a fire that destroyed the confidence of many of the Israelite people, and thus provoked the discussion between brothers and the schism between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
In contrast, Hezekiah, the King of Judah, whose capital was besieged by the tyrant Sennacherib of the Assyrian Empire, followed the advice of the prophet Isaiah and not only saved his own people from destruction but also gained science and knowledge through his victory.
King Rehoboam was unfortunate, while King Hezekiah was blessed, two paths, two destinations, all because these two people had different dispositions when listening. In the spiritual understanding of this truth, taught by the wise King Solomon with his phrase, lies the true spiritual wealth of man. Riches cannot protect a man if pride or arrogance leads him to his own self-destruction; true intelligence lies in the ability to listen to others.
