Space Monks
The Space Monks may be the creatures who inspired the "Journal of the Whills" from George Lucas' Star Wars mythology and H.P. Lovecraft's record-keeping Yith time-travelers. The monks originated in a far-flung corner of space-time, and their species dwindled greatly over the millenia. Because they are very long-lived, they do not care for population numbers so much, and they make great historians.
