Crystal City'deki ıspanak üreticileri Temel Reis'in heykelini dikti.
1929'da Elzie Segar, mahalle komşusu Frank 'Rocky' Fiegal'dan ilham alarak Temel Reis'i yarattığında süper güçleri olmayan bir kahramandı.
Alman bilim insanı Emil von Wolf 1870'de ıspanakta demir olduğunu keşfetti ancak bir hesaplama hatası yaparak 10 kez fazla olarak kaydetti.
30 larda Amerika'da yaşanan büyük buhran sırasında, devlet etin yerine tüketilebilecek demir açısından zengin bir gıda üretimini desteklemek istiyordu. Tesadüftür ki, tam da o zamanda Temel Reis ıspanak yiyerek süper güce kavuşan bir süper kahramana dönüştü.
Ispanak satışları patladı. Tüketimi %33 arttı. Amerikan çocuklarının Temel Reis'ten önce yüzüne bakmadıkları bu yeşil sebze, hindi ve dondurmadan sonra en sevilen yiyecek olmuştu. Büyük buhrandan bu sebeple hiç etkilenmeyen Crystal City sakinleri, refahlarını borçlu oldukları Temel Reis'e şükranlarını sunmak için ilk defa bir çizgi film karakterinin heykelini diktiler.
