Yes indeed this industry is pretty bad for the environment. One of the goals for this project was to have everything I used reused afterwards, By reducing the amount of lilac sand which we had to bring in we were able to find a home for it in different schools as a play sand and I used rented wooden pallets for the underlying structure. Around 99% of the materials were recycled.
